Hello guys,
I have Spectral Layers 11 Pro. However, it is limited for my application now. I want to take a stereo drum track from 50 years ago, and export individual tracks for the toms, snare, cymbals and bass drum.
I read that SL Pro 13 does this…but, how well. Have any of you guys used this feature and how did it do?
Thanks guys.
Mark
Update:
I’ve downloaded the trial version for Spectral Layers 13 Pro. I am now trying to use the Unmix Drums setting to try and separate the individual pieces. So far, trying to isolate just the kick drum is NOT happening. So I can only surmise, it’s the pilot…so far. I’ll keep stabbing away and hopefully, I can attain favorable resuts.
In the meantime, If anyone out there has this program and has good success with exporting individual tracks for the kit, please share your knowledge.
I appreciate you guys.

You do Unmix Song first and then apply Unmix Drums on the resulting Drums Layer, do you?
It works very well.
There are other softwares out there that can do this to.
I use SL every day and have for years. However…different tools for different tasks.
You have an isolated set of stereo drums (only) that you want to demix into snare, hh, 3 separate toms (or whatever), crash cymbal, ride cymbal etc etc…as separate mono components (or stereo for each) in essentially one step.
SL isn’t the tool for that imo.
Check out the trial for restem 2…which is strictly for drum kit demixing. Run your stereo drums through restem and it will pop out your 8 (or whatever) separate kit pieces. It’s pretty impressive…I dunno what underlying code they’re using at wavemachinelabs.
The pro version will (additionally should you need it) simultaneously create midi files of each of your demixed kit pieces (with dynamics intact) that you can lay back into your daw with the demixed audio …in case you plan to also do some drum reinforcement/replacement of your kit audio pieces.
Curious how is that different from the Unmix Drums module in SL ?
I’m not sure what code they use. I have the restem 2 trial here today and fed it a complete mono mix of an uptempo thing of mine from 1967…which amazingly, it pulled out the drums really well, leaving the mix in “other”.
I tried that with sl 12 pro a few minutes ago. Can’t really go directly to “unmix drums” on the full mono mix. Everything stays a mess. Which is fine as I normally don’t begin on a full mix…just did it as a test after doing that with restem as they promoted one “can” start that way.
In using unmix song (first) on sl12, I then fed the mono mixed drums “only” into “unmix drums” and got the mono stems saved to compare.
Restem 2…on this particular source…did well in grabbing the ride and crash cymbals. SL 12 Pro couldn’t distinguish the rides from the hh and both are a bit of a jumble. Sl12 did grab some of the crash cymbals, but not all. Toms sort of grabbed ok but some ended up with snare.
I stand by the idea that with sources being so wildly different, you can never count on one particular program or codeset to be perfect. I just try different things to see what works on a particular source.
With drums at least, I can always manually pull incorrect things out and reunite to the correct kit piece tracks once an automated codeset has done the heavy lifting demix.
