Upper picture is Academico, lower one I switched to Nepomuk:
How can I best correct the text sitting too high in the boxes and for the bar number range? Is the Nepomuk font itself on a higher baseline? It’s the same thing with Splentino or Edwin… I’m sorry if I don’t get how this works, any help is appreciated!
To get the bar number to be centered vertically in its enclosure, go to Library > Engraving Options > Bar Numbers > Enclosure, decrease the Minimum bottom padding and increase the Minimum top padding.
To get the bar number range to be farther away from the staff, go to Library > Engraving Options > Rests > Multi-bar Rests > Design and increase the Bar number range distance below staff.
To get the instrument change label to be centered vertically in its enclosure, go to Library > Paragraph Styles > Instrument Change Labels, increase the Top padding and decrease the Bottom padding.

Is there a way to make he enclosed bar numbers to have the left side align with the margin? It looks like the digits are left aligned, not the enclosure.
Hi @Mats_Frendahl, if you don’t use the bar number enclosure of layout options, but instead use the Border of the Bar Numbers Paragraph Style, you can set the Right Padding and the Indentation to the same amount, and so it seems to align perfectly the left border edge with the margin (systemic barline):
Dorico file example:
bar numbers left border edge aligned .dorico (1.3 MB)

One drawback to using the Border of the Bar Numbers Paragraph Style is that there will also be a border around the bar number range below a multi-bar rest:

Yes, I saw that when I tested, but is that not a consistent layout, with all bar numbers in a frame? I never do parts or large scores so I don’t know the ‘standard’, but it looks consistent at least.
If you don’t mind having bar number ranges in enclosures, then the suggestion by @Christian_R should work well for you.
I think a “Left align enclosure with margin” option would be a suitable ‘FR’.

Thanks a lot! I’m ok with changing these options manually; I was just wondering if anybody knows why these fonts use a different baseline by default? Especially Academico and Nepomuk, as they are both “made” for Dorico…
I think the designers of these fonts are the ones best equipped to answer your question.
The distance of the bar number range is controlled in Engraving Options > Rests > Multi-Bar Rests. (Number 6.)
Different fonts will have different heights and different amounts of blank space above the characters. This is just part of each font’s design.
As you can see, Academico has more space from the top of its bounding box to the baseline.
If you add some ‘normal’ Text (Shift X) below the staff, then the text will sit on the same baseline, whatever it is. Clearly, Staff-attached text is measured from the staff to the baseline (which includes the height of the font within it); whereas bar number ranges are measured from the staff to the top of the font’s bounding box.
Thank you Ben! I can see what you describe and show! Although the necessity of it still evades me.
It does create some friction when trying to quickly demo different fonts in a score. All Text styles that are boxed have to be adjusted (like layout names, instrument change labels).
I guess the discrepancy really stems from the different methods of measuring Dorico seems to employ, as you describe in your last sentence!
Thanks for your message!
