Hi all,
I’ve multitrack projetcs recorded live in studio, each one lasts about 2 hours. The band includes two singers alternating between lead and backing vocals. Each singer has her own audio track, bleeding between both tracks is very low.
My goal: As long as only one vocalist sings, her channel Pan must be centered (0). As soon as the other vocalist adds her voice, the Pan in both vocals channels must be slightly offset, one to the left and the other to the right.
I know that I could manage this using channel automation, but it would be too tiresome with such long recordings. So I’m looking for a way to control the Pan of each vocals track using the signal of the other vocals track in Cubase Pro 15.
Does anybody know a solution?
I think it could theoretically done with a custom scripted modulator, by processing the side chain and generating a stable control signal, but this can be a bit more complicated as you’d have to essentially write a gate that decides when to open (ie output the control signal) and when not.
Thank you, it works great!
First, I made a copy of each vocals track to be used as a control signal (“Ctrl Track”). Both copied tracks are silent (no output routing). In each Ctrl track, I inserted a Gate to get rid of all background noise plus a Comp to smooth level out.
Then I inserted the Envelope Follower modulator in each vocals track, using the “Ctrl Track” of the other singer as sidechain input. The modulator triggers the channel Pan to the left (singer 1) or to the right (singer 2). That’s it!
