How to copy a VST instrument (strings) recorded in one track in Cubase 15 to multiple tracks?

How can I copy a recorded VST string instrument in one track in Cubase 15 to violin 1, violin 2, viola, and cello?

Thank you, Miroslav V.

Hi,

My understanding is that you have the whole String section recorded in one track, and you want to divide it by voice, right?

I do the selection manually. With the right Zoom level, it’s quite fast. Then you can use Logical Editor to put all the selected notes into a new track.

You can select the highest note of a chord via Logical Editor. But this one works only if you have chords. It doesn’t work for polyphonic music.

Thank you, Miroslav V.

Hi @Miroslav_Voboril,

are you using Cubase Pro 15, or which version exactly do you use?

Greetings,
Markus

The Logical Editor can actually do this.

Here’s an example of selecting the highest note(s) of a polyphonic part from at least two voices up to eight voices:

To OP @Miroslav_Voboril

You could achieve this by selecting the different voices via Logical Editor presets and then copy/paste them to your Violin 1, Violin 2, etc. tracks.

Preset to select the 1st voice (of a part with four voices*):

Preset to select the 2nd voice (of a part with four voices*):

For the 3rd and 4th voices just change the “Note Number in Chord” accordingly (to “1” or “0”).

*Note:
If your MIDI part contains more or less voices than four, you can change these presets to include or exclude the voices you want to be selected (or not).

Hi @Miroslav_Voboril ,

thanks for responding.
Yes, Cubase 15, I’d already taken that from your first post.

But I wasn’t sure if you’re using Cubase Pro or Artist.
Since only in Cubase Pro / Artist we have the List Editor and Logical Editor.

Btw. the workflow by @Klaus_Cologne looks good, I’ll try that one too.

Just in case you might find it useful:
this is how I’d often separate multi instrument MIDI notes , inside the same MIDI track:

  • Chords are easiest to separate / assign to instruments, as @Martin.Jirsak correctly says
  • in polyphonic MIDI tracks, it can be more complicated
  • here I use Key Editor (“Piano Roll”) to identify which notes belong to which instrument
(- sometimes I also use the Score Editor for that)
  • then I select all the notes (press STRG / CTRL), keep them selected, and change to List Editor
(I avoid using the parameter line above the project area. One wrong click can destroy much)
  • in List Editor I separate the selected instrument voice’s notes by MIDI Channel, like…
Violin 1 notes to CH 01, then Violin 2 to CH 02, then Viola to CH 03, etc.
  • then I’d configure the separation by MIDI Channels to MIDI tracks in Logical Editor

In Cubase, I still miss a very useful function which Logic Audio used to have, not sure if Apple Logic still has it.

  • there used to be one specific menu entry, which was named “Explode MIDI Channels to tracks”, or something like that. If a MIDI track’s voices were already separated “by Channel”, then there was just one more click to do: all instruments got separated instantly, into their own MIDI tracks.

And now the simplest Method:

  • make 4 (or more) copies of your polyphonic MiDI clip
  • clearly name all of them, according to which instrument that they should play
  • open each one in Key Editor, select all wanted notes, invert selection, delete all unwanted
  • in less complex arrangements, this method can work really fast
  • assign different MIDI Channels to each track (or use Instrument Tracks, right away)

Best wishes,
Markus

Hi,

You can do this in the Info Line is the Key Editor. It’s easier as you don’t have to switch the editors.

Hi Markus,

Thank you very much for your help. I think I’ll use the simplest method: creating multiple copies of the polyphonic MIDI recording. Then I’ll use the editor to invert the selection of notes and delete the ones I don’t need.

I use CUBASE 15 PRO.

Thanks again,
Best regards, Miroslav V.
