How to create a new audio file from Startup Assistant

I’m using the latest version of Wavelab 12 Pro. I want to record a new audio (wav) file. When I open Wavelab all I see is the Startup Assistant. I do not see a way to simply open the app so I can record a new audio file. It seems like I would have to open an existing file or create a project or montage just to get the actual Wavelab to open. Then I would have to backtrack and close that file just to begin what I originally wanted to do. The online help suggests that I can “create or open audio files” from the Startup Assistant.

Am I missing something?

I have to say this tripped me up, too. Why on earth wouldn’t ‘New’ or ‘Create’ be on the main screen? If the point of the startup assistant is to make Wavelab easier to use it has failed the first big test a new user will have.

That recently used files is a button. You can click that and after that click below - do not show this again. Then WL will open without Startup Assistant.

Your screenshot shows the startup window with ‘Recently Used Files’ active. Simply select the ‘Project’ tab at the top of the screen and the ‘Open’ button at lower right will change to ‘Create Empty’. See @PG1’s screenshots above.

Thank you all for the info. I wasn’t wanting to get rid of the Startup Assistant, but that does give me a work-around. It still seems like an oversight to me that there is no Create option for the Audio Editor tab. And it seems unintuitive to navigate to the Project tab if I want to record a new audio file. But that’s a minor annoyance considering the scope of the rest of the app.

You can indeed do that.

It’s not obligatory to use the Project tab to record a new audio file (although, if you want to embrace the project based architecture of WL12, it’s probably the best way to proceed). If you prefer, you can simply use the Audio Editor tab instead.

There’s probably a logical reason for that but I don’t remember what it is. However, there’s a ‘Create Empty’ button (lower right of window) when you select the Audio Editor tab, which does the same thing.

If you can’t see that button it’s probably because you have activated the ‘Recently Used Files’ option. To deselect that option, simply click on the option again while holding Ctrl. This takes you back to the default state.

Under the Audio Editor tab you can also click on the Open button for drag dropping or browsing audio files. The Startup Assistant is pretty comprehensive.

I tend to agree. It would be nice to have a “Record” button (instead of “Create”), which one will open the record box (while creating an empty workspace to host the future recording). I note the idea for a future version.

Stingray - you’re onto something! My Create Empty button must covered up.

I’ll bow out after suggesting that the Create Empty button should always be visible when Audio Editor is selected.
Thanks.

No that’s not the case.

In your screenshot you have selected the ‘Open’ button… there is no Create Empty button when ‘Open’ is selected. You need to click on the ‘Recent’ button instead.

I’m still not seeing it.

From the picture above, when you click on show this dialog on Wavelab Startup on the bottom right and when you restart WL, you will see the create empty button.

Sorry. I can’t see your screenshot. It’s too small. Please post a screenshot of sufficient resolution.

What version of Wavelab are you using? What OS are you using? Please provide a precise step by step procedure of exactly what you are doing and what you are trying to achieve.

Normally when you start Wavelab and select the Audio editor tab in the Startup Assistant you will see the Create Empty button in the lower right corner when the Recent button is selected (and the Recently Used Files option is deselected) as per my screenshot above. If you don’t see the Create Empty button under these circumstances then you may need to activate ‘Show This Dialogue at Wavelab Startup’ (lower right corner) and then restart Wavelab.

TBH this shouldn’t normally present any difficulty. If you don’t see the Create Empty button under the above circumstances then you probably need expert help from @PG1 or, as a last resort, consider uninstalling Wavelab 12 and then reinstalling the latest version of Wavelab 12.

Never mind. I didn’t create a post in order to start an argument or have my intelligence insulted. I only wanted to point out to the bakers something that seemed to be a problem and/or find out how to circumvent being presented with the Assistant with no Create option. Because that’s what I wanted to do - to record new audio - and the only option I had was Close. I seemed to be locked out of doing that until I read the suggestion to choose to bypass the Assistant, which I did.

The first several times I opened the latest version of Wavelab 12 Pro I am positive that when I selected the the Audio Editor option in Startup Assistant there was no Create option - only Close. Now, after having turned off the Assistant and turned it back on again, I do see the Create button. I can, however turn the Assistant off and then bring it up via the File menu and the Create button is not there - just like I initially saw it. Admittedly Create doesn’t need to be there if the program is already open and accessible. But I know there was no Create button the first few times I saw the Assistant before I had turned it off.

So take that information or leave it. I’m done.

Glad you got this working and good luck in your use of Wavelab.

Thanks for your detailed explanation. Now that you explain in full how you got to that window I understand how you fell into that trap.

FYI no insult to your intelligence was intended and please know that to be helpful was the main aim here.
