How to create EndPoints from project

Hi all,

I’m using Dorico 6. I have a project containing strings (violin, viola, etc), brass (horns, trumpets, etc), woodwinds (flute, oboes, etc), etc.

For every track (e.g., flute) I can make an Endpoint from Play mode.

However, how do I make an EndPoint for Strings, Brass, Winds, etc? Is this possible at all from a full project? I know I can create an EndPoint for all Instruments in my project but this will contain all instruments.

Thus, I need something like Endpoints in the BBCSO template.

The only way I see is to temporarily save my project as mulitple subprojects containing only strings, only winds, only brass. And from these make the EndPoints.

Thanks,

antoine

An endpoint is the save state of a single VST. It could be a single instrument or multiple. Are all your strings in one VST using separate Channels?

An Endpoint can also save the state of multiple VSTi’s (eg. BBCSO Woodwinds in the BBCSO template is an example). In my case, every instrument (e.g., oboe) is a single VSTi (i.e., one instance of the East West Opus Player with one instrument/preset loaded).

I checked many videos (including the playlist you refer to) and other resources but it seems that it cannot be done?

A Playback Template can save many endpoints but a single endpoint is a single VST(i) - a slot in the rack with a ‘*’ (endpoint configuration) and and ‘e’ (edit VST(i)). That single VST(i) can have 1 or many (up to 16 per port) instruments.

If you Save the current Endpoint, it will save all loaded VSTs with their states.

Yes, for the Endpoints I’ve made, I’ve created a document that has all the instruments I want (don’t forget that Single Players and Section Players both need to be made), and then save the Endpoint from there.

Well that’s true for saving the document as well. The point is: a single VST, a rack slot, is a single endpoint that can be saved for later use in a playback template.

Yes, but you can’t save just one VST as an Endpoint if you’ve got more than one VST in your document.

I don’t understand that statement. If I have 10 VSTs in the rack and I pick slot 5, click ‘*’, rename it and click “Save Endpoint Configuration”, I fail to see what that has to do with any other VST in the rack (except, as you mention above, their states will be saved).

Aha! I stand corrected. I’ve only ever used the icon at the bottom of the VST list.

So that does indeed help the OP: you can save just one VST. (But presumably not a selection of more than one but not all…?)

Again, you can either save the endpoint for a single track/vsti (where the vsti might have a rack with different sounds like in Halion), or you can save an endpoint for all tracks/vsti’s in the project (arrow at bottom of list). But I want to save a selection of tracks/vsti’s as endpoint. Not possible?

Wow, I never knew that functionality existed! I’ve never needed the functionality, hence I never looked for it. Unfortunately, I think you are correct in assuming you can’t mix and match – all or one.

EDIT: For your use case, I think you will need to build each collection of VSTs you want in one endpoint and save them in separate projects. E.g., new project, load all your woodwinds, save endpoint. Rinse and repeat for all you need.

 and I’ve only ever used the ‘*’. I guess we both learned something new!

I don’t think so.

FWIW, I’ve always used one VST plug-in for each instrument, rather than 16 instruments in one VST. That way, if I only need a trumpet, I’m not loading 15 other Brass instruments that I don’t need. It may depend on your ensemble needs and the VSTs you’re using, of course.
