How to customize note heads in Dorico?
You need to create a custom notehead set.
Using the tool that @asherber referenced, I was quickly able to make this:
Not sure about getting the letters inside enclosures, though…. I’m sure someone with more experience doing this will come along.
Can you say more about what’s wrong in this image? And can you share your Dorico project file?
I have set up a new set of noteheads. The problem is that after clicking OK, all the noteheads will become the style of this set. Why is this?
Did you do “New From Selection”, and then edit the one notehead?
This is a little confusing, but “New From Selection” creates a new set which contains references to the original noteheads – it does not give you a new batch of noteheads to play with. If you do “New From Selection” and then edit one of the noteheads, you’re actually editing the notehead object that still exists in the original set, and changes will reflect there as well.
Instead of editing that one notehead in your new set, you should delete it, and then add a new notehead with the properties that you want. Then your original notehead set will remain unchanged, and you can apply your new set to specific notes in your piece.
But it seems you edited the original notehead (perhaps as well as any added). The original notehead shown is the default notehead, so it naturally affects all the “default” noteheads in your file.
I think this is the problem you are talking about, so how do I create a new batch of notehead sets?
As I indicated, this is a very confusing part of Dorico. Notehead sets have to contain at least one notehead, so when you create a new one, it includes the default “noteheadBlack” notehead, and if you edit that, your changes will also affect that notehead in the “Default Noteheads” set.
Here’s what you need to do to create an entirely new set:
-
Press the “New” button in the bottom left (the + that you have circled)
-
Press the “New” button in the Notehead section
-
Now you have two noteheads that look exactly the same, and the second one is selected
-
Select the first notehead, and press the Remove from Notehead Set button
-
Now you have only one notehead, and you can edit it however you want, or you can add new noteheads to the set
OMG!,very thank you!
That bit me today and could be better worded or explained in the UI… ![]()
