I have Elements 13 which includes Ionica sketch. I want to disable the dynamic automation. I am currently using Ionica sketch for one of my instruments, but when I start playback the dynamic control automaticity reverts back to “ppp”.
I was told that it is as simple as disengaging the ‘midi follow’ switch, but that doesn’t work. Then I received advice to use what is called the playback template.
But that feature is no where to be found in my software. Do I have to download still more software? Can’t I just toggle the dynamics control on and off when I want to use it or not?
Thanks!
did you install Olympus micro choir? It’s not intuitive, but this is necessary to install the templates for Iconica Sketch for it to show up.
Hi Anthony,
Sorry, I’m not going to be of much help, as I have a similar issue! I have 13Pro but I think the Iconica Sketch implementation is the same. I’m not aware of the midi follow switch, or playback templates, despite having been a Cubase user since Atari days, but this should be simple. The great Dom has done a YouTube video on recording automation in one minute, which is all very good, but they don’t tell you what the reasons might be if it doesn’t work!
In my case, I found that I could control the dynamics of the trumpet either with my Korg M3 mod control or by moving the slider on the Halion keyboard with my mouse, but neither way was recorded. Bizarrely, I had earlier found that with an identical track allocated to my Spitfire Epic Brass plugin, the M3 controller didn’t work but moving the plugin dynamics slider with the mouse did work! The M3 does spring back on release, bringing the level down, but the mouse approach gets round that, so if you don’t want the automation can you simply push the level on the rh slider on the Halion keyboard to a suitable level?
I seem to spend far more time trying to resolve problems with Cubase than I do being creative. I hope someone has some answers!
Warm regards,
Chris Corry
I’ve been fighting with this recently, too. Halion Symphony Orchestra uses the Mod Wheel for volume (dynamics) exclusively. However, Sketch uses Mod Wheel on some of the sound variants and on others it uses key velocity. WHY??? I input parts and switch to, say, pizzicato, and I need to change my method of controlling dynamics on the same track.
Maybe someone had a reason for this, but I can’t see it.
Thank you for taking the time to respond. You have been helpful. You have encourage me to remember that there are always work around solutions when I see some of my fellows in the same mud puddle! ha ha! Thanks!
Hi Anthony,
Pleased to receive your kind response this morning! Good luck with all musical endeavours.
Chris
Pizz is considered to be percussion. You can’t alter the volume of a ringing pizz note after it has been plucked. So velocity is typically used to control this. Same for col legno.
For techniques on instruments that allow notes to increase dynamic after they started, they use continuous control signals.
How do you install Olympus micro choir after extracting file please
Adrien,
That makes sense. I don’t use the controls ‘live’ - I step enter all my string parts. I play guitar, so I guess I won’t use those controls and just use the standard channel controls for volume.
