How to do repeats correctly please?

I’m still scrambling up the learning curve for this great software ;o)

I’ve just popped Eleanor Rigby into Dorico. The score is from the Beatles songbook (which Ive had for the best part of fifty years ;o)) and calls for a repeat which occurs between an eighth and whole note which are tied. These notes are at bar 23. So on the second time around, the whole note is replaced by a quarter note. This quarter note has a half tie to indicate it should tied to the afore mentioned eighth note on the second pass.

I couldn’t find a way to do this is Dorico. So my solution was to create bars of different time signatures. It looks unwieldy. Is this the way it should be done or am I missing something?

As far as I can see, it plays properly.

I’m a self taught musician. I’m not a competent sight reader either, typical guitarist. So, I don’t have the background that many on here probably have. I’m using this great software to write music primarily.

Many thanks for your help.

This is the (infamous) tie into 2nd time bar problem.

Here is a fixed version for you…

This workaround uses a hidden grace note tied to the note in the 2nd time bar, but you could also use an l.v. tie and adjust its position in Engrave to it point the other way.

Neither plays back correctly (but there are workarounds for that too - which I can’t remember)

Thanks for that Janus. I appreciate your taking the time.

With you using the word “infamous”, I did a search and found this has been an issue for a number of years. Will they get it fixed eventually?

Yes, it will.

Eventually.
