How to edit condensed staves?

As an example, I have two oboe parts on different staves here. I did not get the expected result after turning on Condensing. I’d like to edit dynamics marks and notes on the condensed stave here, but I found that double click did not work and the notes could not be chosen. How can I edit on condensed staves? Do I have to make changes only on the original staves? Is there anyway to condense staves manually?

If you want to change the content in some way, you have to go to Write mode and edit the music in Galley view (switching condensing on/off takes too long time IMO). A good way to do this is to have two windows open, one in Galley view and one in Page view – faster than switching modes.

If you need to do engraving changes you do that directly on the condensed staves in Engrave mode.

Manual condensing is possible by adding a Condensing change.

What do you want to change?

Thanks for your replying! Using Galley view is really helpful! How to have two windows open simultaneously in one project?

What does “adding a Condensing change” mean and how does it work?

As for why I asked if there’s a way to manually condense the staves, it’s because the automatic condensing has some problems. For example, in the case below, condensing only applied to part of my score, while Flute 1 and Flute 2 were normally condensed in the previous sections.
I wonder if there’s a method to manually control the condensing results for each section rather than simply turning on/off Condensing, which affects the entire score, so that I may have more flexibility in my operations. Alternatively, is there a way for me to enter Write mode on the condensed staves on the Page view, rather than through synchronized editing in the galley view?

Wrong Condensing example:

(Flute 1 and Flute 2 did not be condensed)

(Condensing is correct in another part of the score, though the formatting is messy)

It sounds as if you could benefit from applying → Condensing Changes.

Regarding your flutes that won’t condense, it is difficult to see why without examining the file itself. If you want, post the file or just a section of it that has the problem and we can have a look.

Condensing changes rule local settings for condensing, they are used a lot, see the link that PjotrB posted. You can select a note and add a Condensing change in engrave mode:

Thanks! These methods and the document help me a lot!

This file contains a section including the problem, where bars 1-3 can be condensed normally, while flute1,2 in bars 4-5 cannot be condensed properly.
Wrong example for condensing.dorico (1.3 MB)

Notation options>Condensing>Allow unlimited pitch crossing

Or you can specify how much pitch crossing you want to allow with Limit pitch crossing and the dialogue below.

Thanks a lot! It works : )
