How to edit the visual length of an ornament

Good day all!

I’m working on a big band chart and have placed a fall on a downbeat quarter note for all of the wind players. I’d like to edit the visual length of the fall so that it occupies the full length of the measure/bar but when I drag the lower box, it extends the width of the space that note occupies. What I want visually is for the length of the glyph to extend over the top of the rests in the measure. I’ve searched the forum and user manual to no avail.

Thoughts??

Isn’t a fall just a line? If so, use a line instead of the ornament. You can adjust angle etc of lines in engrave mode.

Yes, more or less, a fall is a squiggly line. In my days of hand engraving and with Finale (note that I’m not making a direct comparison) I was able to hand draw or grab the end of the line and extend it visually as needed. I really should be able to do that with Dorico as well as it’s an industry standard marking.

You can do this, in Engrave mode.

Indeed.

You can also set the default horizontal and vertical span of jazz articulations for a project in Engraving Options > Jazz Articulations.

If you find in general that you want these articulations to be longer, the advantage to setting these values is that the longer articulations will affect note spacing; if you just stretch them in Engrave, they will not.

And jesele…. I was just now able to drag it. For whatever reason, when I tried to do this a couple of days ago, dragging ornament caused the entire beat to be extended. It didn’t do that this time….. Maybe I’m just an idiot…..

Update…. Yes…. dragging the tail end of the ornament causes the entire beat to be extended. That’s absolutely not what I want. And, to be clear, this is a jazz ornament I’m using; not merely a line.

Sorry, I didn’t read carefully enough. If you want to extend this without affecting spacing, then @Andro’s suggestion to use a line is probably best.

If you set the line to start and end at noteheads:

Then you get this by default, and you can adjust in Engrave mode as needed.

All…. Yes, I’m able to use a “squiggly” line and position it as desired in Engrave mode. However, when I look at the parts, none of the changes I made to the to the position of the line are evident. This begs the question: Why do changes made to non-music objects in write or engrave modes not carryover to part editing?

You need to set local properties globally. You can select the lines afterwards and Edit→Propagate Properties. You might have to be in Engrave mode. You can filter for lines.
