How to Enter a fermata Dorico 6

I am using Dorico 6. Steinberg Pro Help says to select the note then type Shift + H and then enter fermata in the pop-over. I entered “fermata” in the popover and the popover closes without inserting a fermata. Also, clicking on the fermata Icon and then clicking the note does nothing. Also selecting the note and then selecting the fermata from the correct palette does nothing.

I want to do SOMETHING! Not nothing. Specifically, I need a fermata over a note. Any version 6 users out there with the same problem?

Hi and welcome to the forum!

No, it works flawlessly here. Note that you can write fer in the popover, it’s shorter and faster than fermata.

Can you post a project that exhibits the problem?

Does this happen in only one project, or in all projects?

It should work perfectly well, so there must be something going wrong somewhere. As Marc says, uploading an example document might reveal more clues.

Here Comes the Light POST.dorico (2.0 MB)

Thanks for the quick response, guys!

I think you’re asking why the fermata doesn’t appear on the second staff in bar 26, right?

The basic answer is that you can’t have a fermata and a breath mark at the same rhythmic position. If you delete the breath mark in that system, the fermata will appear. Then you can start Note Input mode, set the rhythmic grid to something small, like a 32nd note, advance the caret by 1 increment, and add the breath mark back there.

Now, the more interesting question is why the fermata is showing on the other staves, which also have a breath mark on the first beat. I don’t have a good answer for that, but I haven’t had my coffee yet. Interestingly, I can replicate this in other projects – I can add a fermata on a particular beat, and then when I add breath marks to the same beat in different staves, sometimes the two marks co-exist and sometimes the fermata disappears (which is the expected behavior).

Yes, that is the measure. I see your point - it’s the breath mark. The entry technique worked as expected in measure 32. When learning new software, inconsistent behavior in the interface is the gremlin of advancement.

In other words, don’t hold your breath.

I just tried inserting a fermata like you described and it worked perfectly. I also used the word ‘pause’ which also worked.
