How to get better looking slash noteheads for half and whole notes

Former Finale user. I’m having a hard time liking the “slash noteheads” for half and whole notes … they just look horrible to me.

I do a lot of rhythmic charts and use slash notation quite a bit.

I know I can set whole and half notes to some sort of “diamond” noteheads but even those are super tiny.

Also, when half notes are tied, I can’t separate the notes and use diamonds on the half note and slash on the tied note.

Here’s what my “slash notehead” looks like for half note in Dorico..

Here’s what slash notation looked like in Finale…

Is there any way to get slash noteheads for half and whole notes to look better? I just find them so ugly.

@FredGUnn Any suggestions, Todd?

What music font are you using? And is this a slash voice, or a regular voice with slash noteheads?

There are all of these Engraving Options:

You can go into the Notehead Set and tweak them however you want (as I have) too:

I find defining the half at 97% makes the top and bottom bar a bit more visible:

Of course with one click you can change that to this if you want:

I always hated Finale’s Rhythmic Notation slashes! The smaller slashes didn’t pair well with the regular slashes and the ridiculously long stems were goofy.

Thanks for the replies.

I have “oversized” selected and it should be displaying my whole/half notes as diamonds but as you can see, they’re still those weird rhombus-looking things

I think I’m using Petaluma for my music font.

it’s a regular voice and I select to change the noteheads to “slash”

That setting affects Slash Regions and Slash Voices but …

… you aren’t using those so it will have no effect. If you are manually changing the notehead set, it will use whatever set you select. You probably want to be using a Slash Voice here, but if you don’t want to for some reason, you’ll need to choose a different Notehead Set like Slashes / Oversized Slash Noteheads.

This is how I change my desired measures/notes within my chart to slash noteheads.

My charts are usually mixed with default noteheads on notes/measures where the musician needs to play a specific line and also rhythmic notation to denote specific band hits.

Yes, so it will use whatever noteheads you have defined in your Slash Noteheads Notehead Set. That has nothing to do with the Engraving Option setting which specifies how Slash Voices should appear.

Below I’m using a regular voice, a Slash Voice, and a Slash Region (in green):

You do have to use Remove Rests when combining voices. I can’t remember if there’s a default shortcut for that or if I defined it, but you’ll definitely want to use a shortcut if you do this a lot.
