How to get rid of this

Every time I click on Preferences this box pops up.

I see no advantage of Independent For Each User. Any attended sessions people here aren’t touching anything.

Years ago, upon a updated WL version, I guess I selected independent and then a few Waves plugs would not be “seen” no matter what, and it took Waves support hours to discover I had logged in with a different Windows user account. :unamused:

Also, Independent for Each User makes WL start from scratch when I simply want WL 11 (workspace layouts) to look like WL12.

I’m also struggling to remember the location of where WL stores all this stuff, including Independent for Each User.

I will RTFM eventually and skim through Justins videos. I have read maybe 10 minutes of the manual, but frankly I get too excited by some new features, and frustrated that I can’t remember how to grasp the basics since once things are set…I tend to forget how to change them.

Sorry for acting like a newbie. I have been working with WL since version 4.

You can bypass the query if you use the Specific Folder:

This is a bug if you have selected the option “Common for All Users”. This will be fixed in 12.0.40

The strongly recommended setting is “Independent for Each User”. If you select it, you won’t get the annoying message box.

I’ll do that, thank you.

Yes I have been doing that.

I tried that, but that does not automatically import all my Workspace Layout settings that I created in WL11 which consists of control windows and other WL windows over 3 different display monitors.

What I see with that is a basic factory reset where everything is in 1 display, and therefore a lot of work to get back to my custom Workspace Layout.

I just tried this. Open WL12. My custom workspace opens as intended. Then click on Preferences and that window still opens. Clicking yes or no will open the General>Setting Location where Common for All Users is checked.

If I change it to Specific Folder, then assign a location, close WL12, re-open, I still get that nag screen.

And it re-scanned all my plugs and put me back to factory defaults…1 display etc.

To copy your past presets, locate the preference folder of WaveLab 11, and copy the subfolder called “Presets”, into the preference folder of WaveLab 12.

You see to locate the preference folder:

That means you have set the Specific Folder to an empty folder, not to the location where the Common for all Users data are stored, which is by default C:\ProgramData\Steinberg\WaveLab Pro 12.

After changing the folder setting to Specific Folder the popup didn’t appear again.

Thanks! Got it.

I did set Specific Folder to an empty folder.
So I then set it to the default and the popup didn’t appear again. Thanks!

I don’t think I have seen the Setting location options (Common, Independent, App, and Specific) for any other apps I use. At least Cubase doesn’t do this.

Why is the recommended choice Independent for Each User instead of Common for All users?

“Common for All Users” typically requires administrator privileges. This is because these settings affect the entire system or multiple user accounts, which necessitates elevated permissions to ensure that only authorized users can make such changes.
If you have all the required knowledge about this stuff, there is no problem of using “Common for All Users”. But most users don’t, hence this is not the recommended setting.
