How to notate non consolidated rests?

How can I notate my own rests instead of Dorico consolidating them. Some times I need to attach something to a specific metric unit and I may need, say, two quarter rests rather than a half rest. So far I can’t figure this out and Dorico seems to be very dogmatic on this issue.

TIA

In Note input mode with rests and force duration activated, press y to input the rest.

The only thing Dorico is dogmatic about is the difference between implicit and explicit rests. (which is why for most of the time you can ignore rests altogether)

You can make any rest, of any duration, explicit simply by forcing its duration (as @jesele shows)

Thanks. For me what that does is it creates an F3 in the chosen duration rather than a rest.

It’s dogmatic in the sense that I oughta be able to select a half rest and press the quarter note button and get a quarter note rest. There’s no reason for there to be so many things that are unintuitive.

Why? The half rest does not exist as an object (it is implicit).

You can enter explicit rests using o (to force duration) , (to enter rests) Y (to enter an arbitrary pitch) during normal note input.

I guess I’m doing it wrong then. I’ve tried the force duration prior to asking my question and am trying it now, but what I get from Y is an F3, not a rest.

This is what I get with the keystrokes I mentioned…

(A thought… I always use duration before pitch. Is there a difference using pitch before duration?)

I tried it and the result is the same.

As said - I think you are using pitch before duration (and I don’t know how to make that work. Others will).
But - just hit K to toggle over to duration before pitch, and my method will work

As others have pointed out, you have to have Rests activated (click the quarter note icon in the left toolstrip, or press ,) and Force Duration (click the vise icon in the left toolstrip, or press O.

If you are using duration before pitch, then select your duration and press Y to enter the rest. If you are using pitch before duration, then simply selecting the duration will enter the rest.

Here is the relevant section in the manual.

Thanks everyone, but it’s all fixed now. I had all the right buttons pressed but something weird was going on with pressing Y and getting an F3 instead. So I closed Dorico and reopened it and the problem was gone.

  1. Select a half rest.

  1. Press O (the letter O).
  2. Press 6

Bingo: you’ll get two quarter note rests: the first one forced and explicit; the second implicit making up the remainder of the half.

Instead of pressing the Y, you can actually press any note name. As long as you have Force Duration on (o), selected a rhythmical value and invoked Rest Input (,) you can press any key like a,b,c… to get your rests.
