I’m working on an xml import. I’m having trouble figuring out how to prevent the lyric extension lines in the “Dn” lyrics from extending to the grace notes at the beginning of measure 6. This happens a lot in this project, so I’m hoping to find a global setting to prevent this. I’ve tried reentering some of these lyrics manually and adding a hard space at the grace note, but the line still extends through the grace notes. Any suggestions?
I stumbled around and accidentally figured out how to solve this. If I highlight a syllable (for example, measure 6), Option+Left Arrow to shift the syllable back, and then Option+Right Arrow to move it back to the correct note, the lyric extension from the previous word no longer extends through the grace note. I still don’t know if there is a more global way to fix these extenders, but I’m happy to have learned how to at least fix this on a note-by-note basis.
What I normally do: I enter the syllable, then don’t proceed with the space bar, instead leave Lyric Input by finishing with Enter. Then re-enter Lyric Input on the next main note (ignoring the grace note).
That’s what I do when entering lyrics from scratch. I tried to do that with this file, deleting some lyrics and reentering them the way you described, but no luck. This is a clean-up project from someone else. The extensions looked good in the accompanying PDF that they sent. Maybe something odd happened in the conversion from mxl to Dorico.
Is it not, the possibility, in Dorico, to adjust manually the length of this extension line ?
Properties Panel or something like that ?
In Write mode, if you look carefully you’ll see that selected lyrics do actually show a duration, though there’s a rough edge with grace notes (as when they’re at barlines they exist in a weird space that isn’t before the barline and isn’t after the barline). Shift-Alt-Left Arrow will semantically shorten the lyric line by the rhythmic grid resolution (bottom left corner) but you need to know that the extender line will be truncated visually by the rightmost notehead within the semantic duration of the line, so it may take a few Shift-Alt-Left Arrows for you to notice anything change on the page.
This does not work if the last note before the grace note is tied. In this case you could (if you don’t want to follow pianoleo’s suggestion) unbind it, enter lyric and tie again. Another trick is to change the voice of the grace note, although this can have disadvantages in some situations.
