I’m trying to produce the piece attached but I can’t even start the project since it start with a pick up bar of 3/4 and I don’t really know if I use the quarter notes as first voice with the stems down how to I use voice 2 with stem up that start with a 16th notes and a dotted eight note wich is very close to the first quarter note. I’m new to dorico and I’m not really sure how to proceed with this measure.
Please would you be so kind to let me know the procedure to be able to produce this measure as the measure of the attached jpg.
Your help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
You enter the time signature as shift-M 4/4,3 (the 3 indicates the 3 beat length for the pick-up).
You just need to use two different voices for the first beat. Dorico will sort out the spacing for you and if the stems end up going the wrong way, select the note and hit F (for Flip)
Hi Janus
As I told you, I will try to make the first two measures to see if I can make it. Attached it’s the first two measures of my project that I’ve made but I can get it the same as the original page attached. When you look at the original pdf, you will see that in the measure 2 of the Bass Clef the sixteen note is placed before the quarter note of the other voice and the eight dotted note is placed after the quarter note. Is this change anything in the beats. How can I have this display as the original sheet.
It takes time to get used to voice color and sometimes I mix things up, but I redo them . That’s what it took me more time to complete.
Hope I didn’t make too many errors. Your help on this subject would be greatly appreciated again since it helps me quite a bit.
Wow I’m pleased about your quick response and the excellent demonstration of how to solve this problem. I wouldn’t been able to figure this method since I’m new to Dorico.
Many thanks for your great help and time
Germain
Dorico follows conventional notation rules. Often you will find that published pieces do not. But there are always ways to convince Dorico to something different!
Yes, Janus, you’re right, but it takes time to learn all the possibilities of Dorico offer. Hope one day I’ll be much better at it.
I may have other questions on the sheet music Last Date I can see some funny measure with duplets I don’t know if I’ll be able to figure out how I do all these funny triplets
But If I have to much trouble, I will send you a message to explain to me.
Hi Janus, I have some questions for you on the project I’m working on which is the same as last time Last Date. I’m sending you the original I’m using to learn to do it in Dorico 6.1.0 and the project in Dorico format.
I will explain my questions as I finish the attached Dorico project and the original Last Date.
Notice at measure 3 that on my project the first triplets have two eight rests instead of a quarter rest as in the original. I understand that it is the same timing, but I couldn’t figure out how to have a quarter rest instead of two eight rests. Is this a Dorico default?
Measure 3 in the treble staff how can I line up the eight notes of the second voice with the eight notes of the first voice as in the original? Also notice that in my project still in measure 3 of the treble staff, the half note in the original is written with two tied quarter notes in Dorico project. How can I change it to a half note as the original?
OK now still in the third measure of the Bass Clef. I don’t know why I can’t enter the two grace notes before the triplet of the fourth beat.
Measure 4 is the same as measure 3
It’s a copy of measure 3
So, I’ll be very happy if you can explain me all the points that I have problem with I’m sure it will help be a little bit in trying to figure out all of the measure remaining to do
Your help and time and explanations are always welcomed and greatly appreciated.
Sorry I just missed one point for measure 3 on the treble staff . The first beat of voice 2 has no stem on the original. I couldn’t figure out how to split the stem on my Dorico project. Please could you let me know how I can achieve this?
Select the first rest. Type o (to force duration) 6 (to force a quarter rest) - Yes, your original is a non-standard notation.
Technically the upstem voice is also a tuplet (the rest is shared between the voices).
Either use the force duration method (above) - select the note then o 7.
Or set the notation options for note grouping to allow notes that cross the half-bar to be single notes…
Select the a/c note. Start note entry (Enter) start grace notes (/), chose duration (4) … enter the notes (you may need to shift the octave). If you want to lose the slash there’s a property to alter.
Hi Janus
I just completed all the corrections that you’ve sent me in order to have the same look as the original
The only problem I have is to note grouping in measure 3 treble staff to make the two quarter notes tied to a half note. I have followed you way like select the first quarter note then go to notations options and choose to note grouping and choose to notate as a single note and save it but nothing is working the 2 quarter notes remains. I also use the force note duration by typing o7 and nothing change. It’s funny since when I used the force duration in measure 4 to get as quarter rest instead of the two eight rests that I had.
I still have to do the grace note in the bass staff could you please tell me how we get rid of the slash in the grace note
It was so fun when you know a little more and I managed to make it the same way as the original, but you can be sure that it will take me some time to complete this project if you had a good look at the original sheet music.
Your explanation is so precise and well described it’s amazing
Notation options (like Engrave options) affect everything. These are the basic rules Dorico will use to notate your score. Forced duration just overrides those normal rules for specific changes you might want to make.
Select the slashed grace note and change the property (in the lower panel)…
