Hello. I am trying to record midi on different channels within the same midi part using a midi controller. The midi controller has buttons to change the midi channel so for example, lets say I want to play my bass on channel 4 and my violas on channel 2, I could push channel 4 on my midi controller and while still recording I could push channel 2 and record violas in the same part but it does not work. All my midi data is being recorded on channel 1 even though the midi is being sent on seperate channels. What am i not understanding to make this work? My midi track is set to “any” and I checked in a midi monitor that the data is sent on the right channel but in cubase it all gets recorded onto the same channel
Have you set both the MIDI input and the MIDI output of the track to Any?
BTW. Don’t be fooled by the term Any Input, it should actually be labeled Any Channel. ![]()
Thanks for your reply. Here is my midi channel screenshot. My output is to my Addictive keys synth. I don’t have an option for “Any” on the “All midi inputs” selection in my version of cubase. Where can I change this?
How are you verifying that MIDI data is recorded on a single channel even though MIDI Monitor shows input on multiple?
On your version of Cubase, you can’t.
What does your recording look like when you switch the editor view to Channel? Here’s what it looks like (recorded live, first channel 1, then channel 2, channel switching on the MIDI keyboard):
Perhaps I don’t understand the question but…. because all the notes are yellow! They are all recorded on channel one. In my key editor all notes recorded on channel one are yellow as I have it set up. Am I missing something? I don’t want to upgrade Cubase because I use the score editor and am not interested in switching over to any new software… the upgrade loop is endless and want to focus on composing instead of learning new software… now it seems features are coming up that make it difficult not to want to upgrade ![]()
THe view was on channel. Sorry I thought that was obvious. I have yellow set to channel 1
Strange, I now have it working in a new project but not sure why.. here is a screenshot. I switched from channel 1 (yellow) to channel 4(purple) during recording and it recorded correctly… my midi channel is set to channel 1 now however. I can’t make sense of it….
I wonder if it has something to do with the score editor…. when the score editor is open I think it overides this somehow and your channel value is determined by the score editor settings
That means the track will output MIDI data on channel 1 regardless of what channels are used in the parts.
Ok but the synth plays back no matter which channel I put it on so what difference does this setting make? Is it for synths with different instruments like halion?
Yes, multi timbral synths are the most common use of multiple MIDI channels on the same port.
You have to set the MIDI Out channel to Any. Only then the notes will be played back using the channels recorded on the track. If you set a channel number (1-16), all notes will be output on that channel, regardless of how they are stored on the track.
In your image, the yellow notes should reproduce the sound set to channel 1, and the purple notes the sound set to channel 4 in the VSTi. This, of course, assumes that the MIDI Out is set to Any.
Firstly, despite what has been said, recording midi on different channels is possible in “earlier” versions of Cubase. The problem I was having was that the score editor was open and when it is open the editor seems to overide the input of midi notes and records them onto the channel specified in the score editor. If the score editor is not open the notes record as they should on the channel they should… no new version required. Hope that helps if anyone else had a similar problem
thanks for all the. help
