How to reduce background noise without damaging the voice?

Hi, so I was wondering what is the easiest way to clean up spoken audio in Cubase?

I sometimes have recordings with steady fan noise and room hiss. A gate helps during pauses, but the noise is still audible underneath the speech, and stronger settings can cut off quieter words.

For a few short clips I tried VoiceCleaner AI, which worked pretty well as a quick cleanup. The problem is that I have to process the recording outside Cubase and then replace the audio manually.

Is there a straightforward way to get a similar result inside Cubase, or to clean the file externally and replace the original event while keeping its timing and edits?

No connection to the site, by the way. It’s simply the external option I happened to try.

Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

You didn’t say which version of Cubase you’re using, but in Cubase 15 Pro you could try …

… selecting only “Vocals”.

Oh, I have never thought about using stem separation that way. Good idea, definitely worth a try! Following this approach, I’d recommend Spectralyers Go for high quality vocal separation. Since it’s an ARA extension it can be used from within Cubase, too. It’s free for Cubase Pro and Artist users.

Izotope’s RX 12 tools (vst plugins) would be the usual standard for tasks like this. First, I would try @MrSoundman approach!

If you’re looking for a quick, simple fix, Clarity VX can do an OK job. Frequently on sale for 30 dollars (including right now) for the basic version and pretty much a one knob plugin

The free version of Spectralayers also does voice separation.
