Currently, when I put a fermata (or caesura) in a piece I’m working on, it results in a gradual (and to my ear, severe) tempo change leading up to the fermata, and a new slower tempo after the fermata, neither of which is what I want. I’m able to undo the tempo change after the fermata, but the tempo change before it is much more stubborn. This raises two questions:
- How do I remove the tempo change? I simply want the note (or in this case, the rest) held longer than usual, but I don’t want the tempo change. When I look at the tempo track (assuming I’m reading it correctly—and as a new Dorico user, I may not be), the tempo appears to be constant throughout, and I can’t make any sense of the tempo envelope in the key editor
- Why would Dorico insert the tempo change when it isn’t indicated in the score? I understand this may be appropriate in some scores, but it seems odd to assume it would always be what is wanted.
Here’s the score in question: Solo Viola Example.dorico (957.3 KB) The fermata is over a whole rest near the second of the top page, at about 1:06. (The whole piece is one long measure, so I can’t give a bar number.) Also, I’ve been giving NotePerformer a test run, but I don’t think that is what’s causing the tempo change. The same issue occurs when I switch to using Dorico’s built-in sounds.
