How to render only the wet FX return?

Hi everyone,

I use the render In place feature in Cubase because it lets me quickly print audio with effects without having to play the project in real time and record it on another track. It is super efficient compared to routing and recording when the samples are long.

but, there is one situation that slowing me down though. Let’s say I have a normal track that sends signal to a return fx track like a reverb. Sometimes I want to render only the wet effect on its own, not the dry signal. The problem is that Render In Place doesnt work directly on the fx channel afaik. Now I use a couple of tricks to but they feel clunky. One way is I solo the fx track and export it through the render settings, then import the file back into the project on a new track. Its really slow when doing it often compared to render in place. Another method I tried is using render In place on the source track while muting the dry signal. I set the return to pre fader and bring the source track fader down ( no volume) so only the send feeds the return. Then I render using complete signal path. This also works but it gets messy when the return depends on post fader levels, because if i switch to pre fader it changes the reverb amount and I have to rebalance it.

So basically I want to know if there is a proper way to quickly render just the wet signal from an FX return in Cubase ( same issue for group tracks btw), similar to how easy render In place works for normal tracks. Is there a proper way to achieve this?

I suppose you could just make an audio track and select the FX return track as the input, put the audio track into record mode and record it there in realtime.

Right?

yep, that works, and I actually have some custom macros that make that process pretty quick. The main issue though is that it still has to be recorded in real time, which, from experience, becomes a bit impractical with long sounds. For example, if I am recording something Paulstretched that lasts one or two minutes or longer, having to tweak settings and record again each time becomes pretty time consuming. So far the fastest workaround I have know which I said above ,is still relying on the source track and using Render In place. I set the send to pre fader so the audio still feeds the fx, but the dry signal itself is not recorded. The only quirk is that I cant use the channel volume fader anymore. If I need to adjust levels I instead add a simple volume utility plugin or tweak the pre gain knob, since those are pre fader adjustments and keep the balance intact. Anyways, it would be great if Cubase eventually allowed rendering fx returns (and groups) directly.

You can use the Audio Mixdown for this. Simply pick the Effect track as your export channel. Don’t forget to select the “after export” option to “create a new audio track”, so that the created audio appears in your project right away.

That’s amazing.. I never realized mixdown has that option to create new track after render. Thank you
