I can use sends to route a VSTi to a group channel. The output on the VSTi is the instrument so I can route the output to the group channel. So how do I do this? I want the VSTi channel to be muted and play through the group channel only!
By setting the output to the group - this is so basic, that you should maybe start to RTFM.

Don’t you think I already tried that? I can’t do that. The output of the VSTi is the VSTi plugin itself. The input is MIDI.

Sorry, but you were talking about a “VSTi channel”, obviously what you mean is “instrument track” though. So then you´d need the extended Mixer view to do that,. or you use the instrument in with the rack. If that is available or not depends on your used software - again, you need to check TFM.
If not, as a workaround you can use prefader sends, and mute the channel (with the appropriate preference checked), or turn the channelfader completely down.
