How to set up Arturia Keylab Essential to manually record in automation curves

Objective: I’d like to use the knobs on my Arturia Keylab Essential 61 midi controller keyboard to record in automation curves - for example, volume automation on any audio or midi track in my project.

Status: I’ve set up the keyboard and it works for playing notes. It also works in “Analog Lab” mode to control Analog Lab instrument parameters.

What I’ve tried: In Arturia Midi Control Center, set DAW mode to HUI. In Cubase>Studio>Studio Setup add “Mackie HUI” as remote device and set MIDI input/outputs as MIDIIN2 (Arturia Keylab Essential) & MIDIOUT2 (Arturia Keylab Essential). In Studio Setup>Remote Devices>Track Quick Controls ticked “Learn”. Put the Arturia Keylab controller into DAW mode. In Cubase under the Track Inspector Quick Controls, select track volume in the top slot, activated Learn and turned the knobs on the keyboard. It always reverts to a different parameter.

My set-up: Arturia Keylab Essential 61 (mk2); Cubase Pro 11; Focusrite Scarlett 414 audio interface; Windows 10

Grateful for any advice. I know that I can’t install an Arturia script because that only works from Cubase 12. Thanks

Hi,

Where exactly do you mean, please. Could you attach a screenshot?

Thanks. I’m trying to assign Volume to one of the Quick Control slots, then activate Learn and turn the knob on the Arturia controller so that I can then use that knob to record in volume automation on a track. But if there’s a different way I’d be keen to know.

Hi,

How does it look like in the Studio > Studio Setup > Quick Controls? Is the right MIDI Input Port and MIDI Message assigned?

This is how I have it set up at the moment.

Hi,

Address 144 doesn’t sound like a common MIDI CC. What kind of data does it send? Is it RPN or NRPN?

Thanks very much. I’m not sure how to see if it is RPN or NRPN. In case it helps I put MIDI Monitor as an insert on an instrument track. Here is a screenshot showing when I moved the Arturia Master fader and then left it (the 144 values seemed then to be being sent without me touching the keyboard).
