How can I split a lengthy bar repeat region at a specific bar? Or do I have to shorten it from the end?

Just place the caret where you want to split it and press U
My problem is to activate the caret in this drum part at a specific point. Double click doesn’t work.
If the drum part is not the only instrument, try the following.
Switch to the full score layout.
Position the caret in a staff below or above the drum part.
Use the up/down arrow key to move the caret into the drum staff.
Press U.
Thank you Daniel and Steven, this works! And if there are only drums I have to activate the caret before the region starts and move it (puh!) to the desired location.
