I have a piece in 4/4 time but the eight notes can be counted as 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2. I think it would be easier to read if the beams were split accordingly. How do I do this?
You could enter a meter shift-M [3+3+2]/8 and hide it. The numbers in the bracket are the beam groups. To get a 4/4 time signature in the very first bar, you will have to manually set the beaming for just that bar.
Note: this beaming will affect all notes, so if one part has just four crotchets it will appear as
.
You would then need to use force duration to get the crotchets right.
Would not this work (8/8 = [3+3+2]/8 not hidden, to show where it is)?
Or perhaps both RH and LH should follow the same pattern, then your example is fine.
First bar RH manually beamed.
(Oh, I recall the days of Amadeus, treble C 4/4 ba4.,4.,4 F8 …, Done… A bit easier when separating beaming from time signature. Perhaps in a future Dorico version I hope.)
Yes, but local time signatures add another layer of complexity.
My guess was that if @sunny16 were comfortable with local time signatures, they would already know how to solve the beaming problem!
I think in my case it will be best to do “manual beaming”, but thanks for the suggestions. Got it working now!
If you have this beam pattern repeating a number of times, you might find it quicker to copy one bar with the correct beaming multiple times (use R (repeat) if they are consecutive, or alt-click if not) and then re-pitch using the Lock duration (L) function - the beaming will be retained.
