Hi folks, how can I stack instrument numbers in Staff Labels without using Condensing?
I’m not entirely sure what you want to achieve.
It sounds like you want to create this example, but only have 5 players (each playing 2 instruments at a time)
Yes, that’s exactly it.
How do I stack the numbers?
So you effectively want to have a label per voice?
I’m not sure it can be done natively, but I’ve seen some unexpected magic from users on this forum ![]()
My first try was this. Has the disadvantage it takes 3 lines for the staff label, as opposed to 2 lines for a normal condensing staff
Had to look this up. Interesting to read it origins from an extra strip of lead between two rows of letters to increase the line spacing.
Hah, was wondering that too. Thanks @TonH

I learned letterpress printing when I was an undergraduate, from a professor in the graduate school of art. This was in the early days of the DTP era, and the professor said he made all of his graduate design students learn some letterpress, because when they increased the leading in PageMaker by 2 points, he wanted them to know the physical feeling of inserting a 2-pt-thick strip of lead in between the rows of letters.
I suppose by the same token we would all benefit from doing a little plate engraving, but that seems even less likely these days than letterpress, which has enjoyed something of a niche renaissance.
Thanks folks, I was able to get this to work!
