How to start writing on bar 2 or 3 of multi bar rest

Coming from Encore (totally new here)- I have a layout that has the rests established for the part. How do I start the note writing in bar 3 or 4 of the rests? My first two measures are rests.

Welcome to the forum @Sheryl_McDonald!

Firstly, you can toggle bar consolidation on and off (if that’s what you are referring to).

Use the Jump Bar: Type J and then start typing Toggle Bar Consolidation. You won’t need to type the whole lot in.

Secondly, you can just jump forward to whichever bar you like. The key command for moving forwards/backwards per bar is Ctrl/Cmd+right or left arrow.

Does that help?

Welcome to the forum @Sheryl_McDonald !

As Daniel says, when the orange note input caret is active, you can move it wherever you like, including within multi-bar rests. The rhythmic grid that appears above the staff gives you an idea of your position, although admittedly this can get a little squished inside multi-bar rests.

You can temporarily disable multi-bar rests for the current layout, or use a different layout where multi-bar rests are disabled and input notes in there.

Or go back to the Full Score layout, and enter the notes there. You can usually toggle between the score and the part by pressing W. (In the full score, you switch to the part of the selected notes.)

Is it correct that with this method you can only use the right menu to enter e.g. dynamics? I often use it to enter dynamics towards the end of a long tied note but somehow shift+D entries do not work.

As Lilly mentioned the bar lines you see are bit cramped if you have a long rest however if you set the jump of a right arrow to a full bar (left corner) and count your right arrow hits it works well.

I’m not sure what you’re referring to by “this method” but I’m pretty sure I’ve never even used the right panel to enter dynamics.

I activate Note Input, navigate to the place I want my dynamics - and this is anywhere (including mid-tie) - and then use the popover.

I mean activating the carret which will jump to the beginning of a long rest or tied note, then using right arrow to the position it where you want a dynamic, use shift+d and enter e.g. >. On my MBP nothing happens . I have to use the right pannel to enter the hairpin.

If you enter > (or any open-ended dynamic) into the dynamics popover, you need to move the caret to the position you want it to end. Once you’re there, you can either enter in a new dynamic or press ?

Gradual dynamics require duration, so after starting one when the caret is active, you need to advance the caret by pressing Space to give it duration.

It’s a bit tricky that until you do that once, you can’t see the cresc/dim marking at all, admittedly!

many thanks for this clarification but how to indicate the end of the hairpin as indicated in the manual when I am in the middle of tied note? It is either highlighted as a whole or not highlighted when I press shift+D. I have to untie it if I want to highlight just bar 3 and 4.

When I use the right toolbar a hairpin is entered over bar 3 and I can lengthen it if desired but if I press return in the attached screenshot nothing happens.

Ok - I highlighted a two bar rest and did this – with the results of nothing happening. What am I missing?

You have to advance the caret after inputting the cresc marking from the popover, up to the end of bar 4. Make sure that the currently selected note duration in the left panel is eg quarter notes, because that duration is what determines how far ahead the caret jumps each time you press Space.

Then you can end the cresc without adding another dynamic by press ? (that is, Shift-/).

Thanks for your patience but I cannot make it work.

I can of course create a hairpin at the start of the note and then shift it like shown in the video you attached but when I press space to move the caret after I entered the > in my popup the space is created in the popup and the caret is not moving. When I try to take my mouse to the caret entry layer a new note is entered as soon as I push my mouse button. How can I get the focus on the caret being able to move it without closing the popup and without entering a note?

By the way I can add a normal dynamic like f and p with the popup with the caret in the middle of the tied note. Just the hairpin or also a cresc. without time spec does not work.

Somehow it seems also inconsistent that it does not work by pressing shift+d followed by > in the popup and enter whereas clicking on the hairpin in the right menu bar works perfectly well even if no end of the pin is specified.

Press Return to input the crescendo first, then press Space. That should be the order described in the manual.

It definitely does work, it just might require a little practise for you to get familiar with the sequence.

Thanks once more Lillie ,
I never thought of pressing space after enter. You see nothing happening after your press enter which is unusual. You then press space and suddenly your hairpin is there.

Now I know and I hope that others can profit from this time saving method as well as it is at least for me not intuitive especially because the right menu entry of the hairpin does not require to press space.

@Lillie_Harris, thank you very much! Brilliant! I thought it’s not possible in such simple way. I always use workaround that takes more time.
P.S. I was afraid to even ask

Sometimes it’s worth following the steps in the manual exactly as they’re described

Yes, I agree. But sometimes a composer is so caught up with the muse that he can’t imagine to open the manual and look for a solution.

Now I remember there was some discussion about pressing the Space key to enlarge an item on input. But… we get older and older. Some could ask here “where I leave my glasses” too

What manual??

I can’t tell if this is a joke or not, but:
