I realise I can drag an automation marker up and down. However I would like to write the values instead, because I can’t get the exact values when dragging the marker. Is there no way to do this?? I have Cubase artist.

What do you mean by automation marker? Do you mean to click and drag the automation node?
If you want to write an automation, enable the automation of the given track [W], hit play and move the given parameter in the UI, or use any hardware controller.
To type the exact value of the automation node, select it and enter the value in the Info line.
