I have recently received the update from Eric Kruse for his playback template for Virtual Drumline (VDL), and everything is working great! I also have been using Note Performer to handle non-percussion instruments as a good placeholder. What is nice about both of these is that they come with a playback template that automatically assigns instruments to their correct sounds (I am not using correct terminology…) when activated. However, I am looking to use both VDL and Note Performer in the same score (ex: concert band w/ percussion). Is there a way I can either apply each template to a certain selection of instruments in my score, or create a hybrid playback template that handles the winds and percussion separately? (Check for VDL in template, then if not found, route with NotePerformer.).
Hope my question is making sense… Thank you in advance!
Thank you! The only difference I noticed is that I needed to put NotePerformer at the bottom instead of the top like that response suggested. No idea why, but that worked.
Dorico looks at the various endpoints in the template from top to bottom until it finds a matching instrument. So a general endpoint like NP would usually be at the bottom of the list. You can alter this behaviour by setting instrument/family overrides for each endpoint
How did you get VDL and the Eric Kruse to give playback sounds in Dorico? I cannot get this working to save my life and nothing on the forums has helped me.
I have loaded the template that was provided but it doesn’t have any playback audio for any of the instruments. Beyond that, I have no idea what I’m doing with Dorico.
Edit: I guess what I really need is a tutorial for loading in the sound elements form virtual drumline and creating my own map for them. I am new to Dorico and I’m not a software power user in any sense, so this has been a setback.
Was that a Project or Playback template. A project template is what you see when you first open Dorico and are allowed to chose Orchestral, Solo etc. A playback template is something you import and is a self-contained blueprint for the entire VST/audio implementation. As long as you have the proper VST(s) the playback template will load all the necessary VST(s), populate them with instruments and wire the applicable percussion and expression maps.
It included both actually. I loaded the playback template into the project, saved it, rebooted, and reopened the project and the correct playback template was in the project.
Has this been resolved? If not, I can take a look into my setup and compare with yours. Eric does have YouTube tutorials for how to get things setup, and things for those should have been sent with the template. Did you get a dorico file as well with the template?
Not yet. After reaching out to Eric, he mentioned that this is a recent issue and that it is being worked on.
But I did follow the youtube tutorial and readme files. I assume one of the pieces of software that is utilized updated something that broke the template. Hopefully it will be resolved soon.
