I can't get any sounds to work in playback

Hello. I am using newly purchased Dorico in a university setting on several computers. We just installed it, along with all of the accompanying plug-ins, and I cannot get any sound to work, other than the click track. Classes start Monday and I am using it for an arranging course. Help!

Dorico Elements 6

Version 6.1.10.6078 (Oct 8 2025)

Dorico 6 AudioEngine Version 6.1.0.13

Update: I get a message that says: “An essential component used by Dorico for playback has not been found. Please run the Steinberg download assistant and install the following:” along with a list of components that we have downloaded. But Dorico doesn’t seem to be finding them when I run it.

Hi @machowi, and welcome to the Forum.

See this post with links to helpful videos for troubleshooting:

Also it would be probably helpful for the Team if you could upload a Diagnostic Report file here. You can generate it from menu Help>Create Diagnosing Report. Then upload the resulting zip file here.

Dorico Diagnostics.zip (388.7 KB)

I checked out the previous posts with similar issues and watched the video. None of those fixes worked. We wiped Dorico from one computer and started over from scratch…same issue. Dorico does NOT seem to be finding or associating with the companion software applications. Diagnostic zip file is in a previous response right above this.

Wait until tomorrow (now is late evening in Europe), when probably someone of the Team ( @Ulf for example) will probably tell you something very useful.

Most likely there are permissions issues. But I won’t pre-judge analysis of your diagnostics.

Update: I think we’ve figured it out. Because it is being used on institutional computers we had to change permissions for everyone in the Windows system coding. It would have been nice to know that was a thing 3 hours ago, or several days ago when we first installed the software.

Memo to Steinberg: If someone is purchasing an institutional license for Dorico, please let them know up front of that change that has to be made. We found the idea briefly mentioned about 12 minutes into the 15 minute video. I do thank you for providing the troubleshooting video and other guidance. I look forward to learning the Dorico software and introducing it to my arranging class.

Hi @machowi ,
sorry for joining the party late. If there would not have been the time shift between us, I would have immediately asked you to check on file permissions. But good to hear that you have it up and running by now.
