Hi all, I am new to Dorico. I have just installed Dorico SE using the Steinberg Download Assistant. I clicked “install all”, waited, and then opened up Dorico 6. I tried to load the Bach fugue preset and click play, but I don’t hear any sound. Also, when I open a new score and try entering notes, I don’t hear any sound, nor when I play them back. I am not sure why and how this is caused on a fresh installation.
I have already consulted several forum threads and a troubleshoot video, but none of them worked.
As is common in professional audio apps, the sound output doesn’t automatically follow system settings. In this dialog (and the Device Control Panel), make sure the sound is actually sent to the device you’re expecting to hear it from.
Thanks! The selected Stereo Output is the one I’d expect output from. Also when I click on “Device Control Panel…”, the correct output device is selected, yet I don’t hear any sound from this output device. Also, when I change option on that screen, I still don’t hear any sound.
together with the following mixer image, show that you have not loaded a VST to play your piano.
A simple start point would be to apply the Auto playback template (Play>Playback Templates… select Auto and hit Apply & Close). Dorico will load a suitable playback setup.
If that does not work, then there is a different problem…
I already tried that, but unfortunately, the issue still persists. The playback buttons on the top right grey out for a second, until they become back again but there is still no sound during playback. The VST instruments panel also stays empty.
Then there is a problem with the installation of the VSTs/sound libraries.
What happens if you try to manually add a VST (click the + button under VST Intruments) and a dropdown should appear of ‘available’ VSTs… Steinberg should be on the list, but you may have others eg Kontakt from Native Instruments. Can you load any and then (using the track inspector tab) route your piano to it?
When I click the “+” under “VST Instruments”, first i see this:
then a dropdown, listing only Steinberg. I can then choose from Dorico Beep or Halion Sonic. When I choose DoricoBeep, I still don’t hear sound. When I choose Halion Sonic, I see this:
That aside, all this should happen automatically if your installation is OK.
So, you should do Help>Create Diagnostic Report and upload here the zip file that appears on your desktop. Then one of the team can help you with your set up (though it is the weekend, so a little patience may be required)
Sorry, I did not use the Track Inspector. I misread your post. That aside, I tried selecting Halion Sonic from the dropdown from the Track Inspector. It is set to port 1, channel 1, but I still hear nothing. When I select DoricoBeep however is interesting. Now I do hear sound, but it is no piano sound. It is a very weird muffled audio noise sound. It almost sounds like my headphones are broken (which thankfully they are not!).

P.S. some additional information, not sure if it will be useful. This is the third time I tried installing Dorico. The previous two times I tried out the program very briefly but wasn’t satisfied with it both times, so I ended up uninstalling everything. This was quite some time ago (1-2 years I think). However, I started to have some bad experiences with the current notation software I am using so that’s why I am trying to install Dorico again. I don’t think it matters much as I made sure all Dorico and Steinberg related stuff was uninstalled. The previous times, I did have playback sound. Just for some reason right now, I do not.
P.P.S. I also tried reinstalling Dorico SE today as a consequence of the playback issue, so technically I have installed Dorico four times by now.
For most users installation is painless, but everyone’s set up is different.
We’ll have to wait until @Ulf or one of his collegues come on line (it’s past midnight here in Europe)
in the logs I see, that Dorico is still missing the content for the Etude Elements sound library. So please install that one as well (via the Steinberg Download Assistant).
Or what happens if you go in Dorico to Play > Playback Template and there apply the Auto template? Does that load the sound patches into HALion Sonic?
Hi, I already tried pressing the Auto template button. After that, nothing happens. The VST window in Play mode is still empty and I still hear no playback sound.

I simply clicked “Install all” just as in the video and thought that would suffice. So there is also an Etude Elements sound library? Where in the Steinberg Download Assistant is the button to download it?
EDIT it looks like Etude Elements is a paid sound library? I am on the Dorico SE free version, so prefer to use the free sound fonts that come with Dorico SE rather than paying for an expanded sound font.
Thanks for you help. I did try rebooting my machine, as well as uninstalling dorico and all steinberg apps, and then reinstalling it, but none of those solved the issue. I am not sure what is going wrong.
Sorry that didn’t help. Other things we overlook…. Do you happen to have any other app open that uses audio? They often don’t work together well — one won’t share the resource.
Just tried closing all programs that used audio except Dorico, but that didn’t work either. Doesn’t the problem have to do with the Halion VST not loading properly? I don’t see any activity in the mixer, nor any VST loaded in the Play Mode Screen. I am able to select DoricoBeep under Routing, and then I get weird audio noise and activity in the mixer, but no proper piano sound.
Again, sorry that didn’t help. Can you possibly upload your project? Or make a copy and delete all but a couple of bars? I’m sure someone can quickly figure it out if there’s a setup problem. If it’s a system thing you might have to wait until @Ulf is back at work.
Right, only Dorico Pro and Elements come with the Etude Elements sound library.
So in the Playback Template dialog, if in there you click on the Show All Factory button, which templates get listed there. If you choose and apply one with HALion Sonic in the name, do then sounds get automatically loaded into HALion Sonic?
Since you heard DoricoBeep making sound, we know that the audio engine as such is working. Only the loading of sound files seems somewhat broken.
