I have been a very happy LPX user for many many years, I love the program. But I got this impulse to check out Cubase and after about 4 hours of messing with it, I am an instant convert. Wow, for my workflow and needs it’s just superior. The midi editing capabilities are just incredible. And yes, many of you will say “You can do that too with LPX” but something about the layout and flow just speaks to me.
With that being said, I am now at the back of the line as a beginner again with learning a new software. I am not mad at it as I am finding the program not super difficult to get up and running which I am thankful for.
But, I did start using someone’s orchestral template that I got online which I love and all is working well. Since I am learning the layout of tracks and signal flow I wanted jump off someone else’s efforts thus working from a pre made template versus having to make my own from scratch.
Sooo with all of that said, I am encountering just the weirdest behavior when importing a video. The issue is that when importing a video to score to, I can see and hear the audio track no problem, but the video playback is black? Now what is strange is that this is only happening in this pre made template. I can import the same exact video in a new Cubase session and everything works as expected. To be clear ANY video, with any frame rate does not play back the video, but only the audio in this template.
I find this to be a head scratcher, as this is not even an issue with having to learn the ropes within Cubase.. it’s a basic import function.
I just can’t seem to get any video to playback when working with any video file in this pre made template.
Does anyone have any ideas here? I could certainly start from scratch and make a brand new template but I was trying to avoid that and I like how this one is laid out etc. I am hoping there is something rather simple that I am overlooking.
It’s frustrating since I am ready to rock and get working with Cubase!
Thank you so much for your feedback and attention to this!
Im running Cubase 15 on a Mac Mini 2024 running OS Tahoe (26.6.1). I unfortunately do not know which version of Cubase it was created on. But a recent one most likely.
Hey there, fellow former Logic user and Cubase convert, which I use for scoring to video as well! Sounds like you got your issue figured out. I wanted to say while I get your point of starting from someone else’s template to build and learn from, there’s possibly no better way to learn the program than starting from scratch, so you really learn all the nuances and understand how Cubase handles signal flow and mixer tools which are a tad different from Logic. Judging by your name you probably also use Dorico, so I would recommend checking out the Music Chef channel, where he talks a lot about Cubase/Dorico templates and workflows, understanding it all from the ground up. There’s a few tiny things I miss from LPX but honestly not much - Cubase has been so much more efficient and customizable overall. One of my favorite things is not having to think about random bus names (“Bus 13… was that reverb or a delay?”), since with Cubase you just name an FX send whatever you want and that’s what you see. Midi editing is so much faster, track filters and searchability and so many other workflow nuances that have sped me up greatly. Good luck and enjoy the journey!
Hey Wing, nice to hear from you and I know you are right and I may just build my own template. Ugh it just feels like such a big hill to climb after getting my LPX template so dialed in little by little over the years. But I am so happy with Cubase, ecstatic actually that it will be worth it so I appreciate your feedback with this. I am aware of the Music Chef channel and have been perusing it recently. I am just so excited about this software and look forward to becoming a power user in a few months! Logic was great, I cannot knock it but Cubase is superior in the end. Best!
