I can see the code now
…
#ifdef _MR_SOUNDMAN_
wipe_everything_no_mercy();
#else
be_kind_and_just_move_stuff();
#endif
… but seriously, I’m glad the OP was able to recover the files, and would not make fun of what could have been a disaster. If I’m “perfect”, it is only from having learned from such mistakes through personal experience!
I might be the only one who is a fan of the Pool Window, but it can show the full path to each file used in a project and whether a file is referenced (“used”) in that project. It also won’t let you delete files that are in use.
Nevertheless, full and regular self-managed and tested backups are the only true safeguard against such mistakes.
Just to clarify, I didn’t get back all the files I needed which was the vox n kik which is what I was desperately seeking. The upshot is, backup is king.
Hope the feature request is completed by yesterday, or is that too soon.
It does amaze me that CuBase doesn’t follow a basic rational saving file system, like if you save as a .cpr to a different folder within a project, the files created for that project used don’t regenerate to the Audio folder in the new project folder. Makes sense?
Anyway, I’m too devastated to go anywhere near the job for the next few days.
I must say though, I did get a few laughs from your comments, thanks for that one and all, appreciated absolutely.
That is if we remember to keep an eye on the Pool Window! Even then, the Sampler Track is notorious for retaining a link to the original file location.
I have used the Backup Project facility on numerous occasions where the Sampler Track still retains a link to the original file location, so if you happen to zap the original project and its folders, the sample is gone too. I’ve found this when revisiting a project after months or years and the sample is long gone. Even if I then find an old copy of the sample file, trying to change the location in the project, results in losing all the slices etc.
One reason I don’t use the sampler track these days - but I’m hijacking the thread here, so that’s a discussion for another day, but as for this:
You need to become conversant with the File / Back up Project and Media / Prepare Archive commands.
we totally need this because erasing things from the trash has messed up links even in the actual session, not earlier versions for me many times, so this would be helpful.
