I saw the announcement about the Download Assistant, but I don't already have it installed

If I don’t have the Download Assistant installed, do I need to install it? I use Dorico 5. I do have other things installed but not always sure what they do. Where might I go in the manual to learn more?

How does the Download Assistant differ from the Activation Manager? I do have that installed.

What does the Steinberg Library do? I just tried it now any my system warns me I have an app that wants to change my computer.

It’s not necessary, but it is helpful. It handles all your Steinberg products, not just Dorico.

Activation Manager handles all your licences (again for all Steinberg products), so you can activate/deactivate products on different computers

The library manager handles all the sound libraries (HSO, Iconica Sketch etc) simplifying things if you want to move them to different places on your system.

A number of Dorico updates have included new “content”, such as the Etude Elements piano, or the Marching Percussion. Any future content will show up in the Download Assistant, whereas if you just download the Dorico app updater, you might miss out, or have to download it yourself manually.

I’m not familiar with the “Dorico app updater.” Is there an official name for that and is it distinct from the Activation Manager? Thanks.

When there are updates, you get (on a Mac, anyway) a disk image that contains data for the OS installer app.

The SDA downloads this and triggers its installation. But you can do this in one go, for all the components that Dorico uses, so the app itself, HALion player, and all the samples.

In short: use the SDA for an easy life. Yes, it’s an additional layer, and there’s an irony when it wants to update itself before updating anything else – but you get the same with Microsoft’s Auto-updater app, and loads of others.
