If it can be done entirely in Dorico’s data then it should be doable, but if it requires us to also change data in the separate data maintained by the audio engine, it might be a lot trickier.

Probably oversimplifying, here, but wouldn’t it just be a matter of renumbering the existing VSTi instances? The empty ones should already be disconnected from the audio engine.
