iCloud Drive issues on iPad: Error creating zip file / Cannot save in-place

Hello. Today, while working in a project and after switching apps back and forth, I encountered this error:

Then, after some more switching apps, Dorico restarted (the project was loaded again) and I lost my work. Just a couple of notes, not a big deal, otherwise I would have tried exporting the project first. But after that, everything works. I don’t know what caused this.

Make sure that you are saving your document in a suitable location (e.g. in your user’s Documents folder).

Dorico files are actually zipped bundles of lots of files; and it looks like Dorico is trying to save your document to a system location.

The file continued to be saved as normal after Dorico was restarted, without needing to relocate the file. I think this directory is the Dorico sandbox, whether it is the Dorico folder in “On my iPad” or “iCloud”.
Which leads me to another question: this file was in a subdirectory of my Documents folder on iCloud. I never moved it to the On my iPad or iCloud Dorico folders. However, somehow, it ended there, as well as some other projects I never created on the iPad, but that I opened there at some time. My question is: how these files end up in the Dorico folder, instead of opening and saving in place?

As a matter of fact, this happened again.

I opened this file within iCloud (a subfolder of):

And this file was created within the Dorico folder in iCloud Drive.

How can I avoid this?

Hello again,
I’m trying to solve this issue and, so far, I’ve been unsuccessful. I’ve tried logging out of iCloud and in again, but the problem persists. Some of the files that were saved within the Dorico “on my iPad” folder that were originally created on iCloud Drive and should open in place are from January 2025, so I don’t know for how long I’ve been making edits on the iPad thinking they’d open in place and sync with iCloud in their original folder.
For now, I’ve chosen “iCloud Drive” as the default saving location, and I’m working in the current project from the Dorico folder in iCloud both in the iPad and in the Mac, but this is not a permanent solution to me. Before trying uninstalling Dorico and thus losing all my settings, I’d like to know if there’s something I’m doing wrong.
Thanks.

Same problem here. The files are being saved in iCloud. An older version of the file has synced, but I can’t save the current version that has new things in it.

Edit: it failed an autosave after I exported the PDF and audio, and then it switched to the file browser. When I reopened the file, my new work was gone. I wasn’t able to export the .dorico file before I lost the data.

I wish that there were a way to save in Dropbox by default (without giving access to my entire Dropbox account), because I don’t normally use iCloud or the iPad file system, so I have to copy my Dorico files out of iCloud into Dropbox when I get to my laptop.
