Iconica Sketch

My other hobby is woodwork. I have a table saw, a track saw, a mitre (miter) saw, a band saw, a jig saw, a circular saw, a scroll saw, a coping saw a (push) tenon saw, and a set of Japanese pull saws. Theoretically, any of these can be used to make a piece of wood thinner or longer. Sometimes I am fairly certain one of these tools is best for the job. Sometimes I am wrong. Other times, I try many many different methods before I find one that works best for what I want to achieve right now. Then one day, I win the lotto, I buy a magic youbeuat (that’s an Australian expression) CNC machine that does everything at the touch of a button. Suddenly I have lost all interest in woodworking. I don’t want to go there! Long story short, the best way to get a job done might require more than one tool, and the exploring may be the best part.

Is there a way to move the Iconica Sketch content to the external drive where I keep the sound libraries? I can’t even find where it has been installed. I’m on a Mac.

Steinberg Library Manager?

Only, it doesn’t move anything.

In any case, I’ve found the file. It was inside the /Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Content/HALion/VST Sound/ folder.

I moved it manually, and let’s see if I can tell Halion the new path.

If only there was some kind of Library Manager application, that would do this for you…!

Here’s some comparison orchestral audio:

First, Iconica.

Everything is nicely balanced, with good dynamic range. And, you’ll be able to get this on your iPad!

Next, NotePerformer:

The Gold Standard. A bit in-yer-face. Perhaps some config changes required. (Alternatively, you could probably change Dorico’s Playback Options with Iconica to get a bit more phatness.)

Now, GPO5.

Dynamics very hard to control. Balance not great.

Those are pretty much your choices in the sub-$150 range.

It doesn’t. Click Move, and nothing happens.

Paolo

It that because you’ve already moved manually? It has worked for me.

No, I hadn’t done anything. I clicked Move in the Steinberg Library Manager, chose a destination folder in the external drive, confirmed, and then nothing happened. No drive activity, no error message.

I’ve reinstalled IS from SDM in my Mac Monterey.

Then, I’ve tried again to move it to an external SSD, using Steinberg Library Manager.

This time, I get an error message. As before, the library has not been moved, and there is no explanation of what went wrong.

Iconica Sketch can’t be moved

Paolo

Since all my other Steinberg sounds are already on a separate drive, it seems that that’s where Sketch was installed from the start.

Dear Daniel, I’ve tried importing the iconica playback template but it does not appear. Steinberg Library Manager seems to find everything…
Here’s my diagnostic files :

Dorico Diagnostics.zip (1,4 Mo)

You’re missing most or all of the HALion Sonic Selection content, Marc. Please try reinstalling the HALion Sonic Selection via Steinberg Download Assistant.

Ok. Everything was already installed, and that was showing in the SDA, but I’ll reinstall and report

Check Steinberg Library Manager. Dorico definitely doesn’t think that content is installed. (It would be telling you every time you start the application, but you’ve suppressed the warning, so it can’t.)

Everything is ok now ! Thank you !

Is it the idea that all common instruments will eventually be available? I’m writing for solo strings and saxophones, so I don’t think I’m in the target audience for the current version.

No, Iconica Sketch is complete as it stands. All of the instruments that were part of the original production for Iconica Sections and Players are included in Iconica Sketch. There are no plans to add further instruments to this library.

Thank you for your answer.

Good sax samples seem to be a tough nut for developers. I have Chris Hein Horns, but except when using a solo sax, they require lots of tweaking, and still dont work as well- in a band context- as NP. I posted a Big Band arrangement called “Doo Be Dop!” on the forum awhile back using just Noteperformer. NP’s saxes work pretty well in that context- and in other concert band works of mine. I can sympathize; I was a pro sax player for 40+ years.
