Idiots' guide to getting page number to show on 1st page of each flow

I have my first ever Dorico-engraved project ready to go to press aside from one detail. I have read all the help guides and previous forum threads and haven’t managed to do this so I could really do with someone breaking it down into simple steps for me.

It’s a volume of 10 piano pieces which I have engraved as one project with each piece in a separate flow. I have selected the option to have the page number ‘always shown’ but this hasn’t worked.

I have tried to insert a token into the ‘first page’ template but when I try to type text into the box I have created at the top left-hand corner it just jumps to the flow title text instead.

Any help much appreciated, especially if you can break it down step by step assuming little knowledge of how to do the various steps!

Do you mean this option in Layout Options > Page Setup > Flows?

If you’re using the First page template for the start of every new flow, then yes, you’ll need to add a page number frame.

If another text frame is in the way, just move it to the side temporarily.

I have always maintained that the First template ought to have a page number by default, because there are Layout Options to suppress it on page 1; but it is essential when the First template is used for the start of Flows.

I’d suggest creating a text frame anywhere outside the title frame area (much easier!), setting the frame’s vertical alignement to top (if needed, probably better for page numbers) and stretching it across the full width to take advantage of the left/right alignment difference (default in Paragraph Styles > Page Numbers.)

Then you can move the frame to the top and apply “Copy Page Layout L>R”

@Derrek That’s exactly how I do it. No need for separate L/R hand versions.

Thank you! I’ve just followed your video and my page numbers are now all sorted after a couple of hours of trying to no avail. I really appreciate you taking the time to create the video as I was able to follow it quite easily.

Thanks. Yes it would be great if it could be a simple toggle on/off option for page numbers on initial pages. Version 7 maybe…

You’re welcome! just one thing I forgot, which can be important if you want to re-use this template with different paper size or margins: select your created frame and disable the bottom anchor:

Thank you!
