I had a similar issue.

This is a problem which is often happened on OSX.
Sometimes it is because the drives, special external, take to long to wakeup.
Sometimes it is because the driver for a device does not support sleep mode.

Best is set the system settings to “Go to sleep never”. You can set turn of display to what you want.
Also turn off “allow hard drive turn of if possible”
