I'm still using SL Pro version 12.0.30 because

The latest version, 12.0.40, does not use the GPU as much as 12.0.30. This apparently doesn’t bother users with a newer/bigger/better PCs but is this where things are going to stay? My dated AMD video card with just 8G of memory basically works pretty well with 12.0.30. However, in 12.0.40 the video card GPU is not being used at all (pretty much).

Was I wrong to think that there was a time SP was intent on using the video card ram as much as possible? That doing this would produce faster SP run times?

Hey, I optimized my RX 6800 XT using KI.

I tweaked the BIOS settings, Spectral Layers options, and graphics driver settings, and now it’s running like a charm.

Jonas, hi. First up, what is KI? and are you saying that it’s an external app that can adjust the BIOS and the graphics driver? I’ve never heard of KI.

Also what adjustment did you make to SP?

My guess is KI (Künstliche Intelligenz) = AI (Artificial Intelligence). German abbreviation lost in translation.

If I am remembering right, a number of users (including me) had an issue with 12.0.30 where if the video card didn’t have enough VRAM for the job, SpectraLayers would simply crash. The change they made in 12.0.40 (I believe) is for SpectraLayers to fall back on system RAM if the GPU didn’t have enough available RAM for processing. I believe this is what you’re experiencing (it’s running slower for you because the program decided your GPU didn’t have enough RAM). So, the change actually fixed a very serious problem that other users were having, but it did negatively affect the performance for people whose GPUs have less VRAM than the current version needs. I think the real issue is that the app has to use one type of RAM or the other; it can’t start with one and then fall back on the other type mid-process, apparently?

I appreciate your input, I do. But in the end, it’s the GPU that performs the work faster than the CPU. And, in my case the GPU 8G is still faster than my i7 CPU (with 64G of ram).

Unfortunately, the 12.0.40 version (as you suggest) does not think my GPU can do the work and so it avoids it and ops for the CPU. What I can do is buy a video card with more ram - OR - the software can sort a combination of GPU and CPU to improve the speed. I’m thinking that that particular software is too difficult to create, so here we are.
