With all the emphasis on ATMOS/Immersive Mixing, why is there no multi-track recording option to capture the source in surround? If I want a 5.1 source input, I have to make a 5.1 group and route my 5 mics to that group and then send the output of that group to a 5.1 recording track to get a 5.1 event.
Why can’t I just make a 5.1/7.1/5.1.4/7.1.4 etc track, just like the mono and stereo tracks that are available for recording the source material?
While we’re at it, how come there aren’t any surround dynamic or EQ plug-ins availabe yet. Surround is more than 30 years old now. Yet with all this attention being paid to ATMOS, we’re still having to stack multiple plugs in all kinds of “Cat in the Hat” routing structures to approximate genuine immersive recordings.
I would’ve thought that Nuendo would be all over this by now. We should have to keep up-mxing source material, unless it’s older material submitted for re-mixing updates. We should have immersive source material to work with.
((As a side note. I have the feeling that Nuendo is running behind in immersive music creation/producing/mixing the last couple of years. Postproduction gets all the attention of course, and that is normal and necessary. But I was hoping for new possibilities for immersive production too.
Ambisonics is still only 4OA (in most cases even only in 3OA), the channel ordering is not updated/changeble, the same for the channel width (you can’t change for instance a 7.1.4 into a 9.1.6), immersive functions are not programmable via Midi Remote, Halion is only up to 5.1, mulitmono for external effects is not possible (luckely all stock plugins can be multimono too), folder groups are not possible in other format than project channel width, internal atmos renderer monitoring can’t be controlled by Control Room, Eclipsa integration would be fine, no live re-renders from the internal atmos renderer. A long list.
I was hoping Nuendo 15 should bring new immersive stuff, but nothing happened.
I’m a big advocate of immersive music production and do lots of promotion for Nuendo in my book on Immersive Music and my classes. So this is a frustration from a big fan of the DAW.))
I think this is different from assigning inputs to an audio track, right? So if I wanted to record something to an audio track where the source is not an input bus, then the source needs to match the channel width… no?
I just meant that in your example you’ve created an input bus that has the desired channel width, and then you connect its child-buses to the appropriate hardware inputs. In contrast, you could also choose to for example record onto an audio track the output of a source that is not an input bus. I sometimes punch into my stems from my output buses when I do fixes for clients.
In those cases I select the desired output bus (which are my mixes and stems) as a source on my audio track and record. Obviously this is all fine because the sources for the audio track are the same channel width.
What if this is not the case though? What if you want to record a stereo source that is not an input-bus onto a 5.1 audio track (for whatever reason)?
I’m guessing that a bus would have to be created as an intermediary. Is that correct?
I have a shortcut KC that opens the little module to generate tracks, FX, Ruler, etc. I’m so used to using that, that I completely forgot that it’s connected to that Giant F4 menu!
As you can see in the photo, it doesn’t offer the option you showed in your screen shot. That’s why I was wondering why there was no multi-track INPUT option. So yes, this does help a lot. I have adjusted my template accordingly. Thanks!
I’m not sure I understand how these plug-ins are multi channel. Every example of use that I’ve seen has been for mono/stereo tracks. Even a multi-band compressor isn’t the same as multi-channel. Can you explain how you could use Black Valve on a 5.1 source in a multi-channel capacity. Because, as far as I can tell, just inserting in the channel is coloring the entire 6 sources in the track with the same color.
Are you referring to multi-mono plugins like in Pro Tools? Currently, I’m only using them mixing in Dolby Atmos. I do use the Black Valve on my 7.1.4 Drum BUS quite a bit.
I also use Steinberg stock plugins this way. Great they can do that!
But if I’m correct, the stock plugins are multi-mono, not multichannel. Multichannel is when all channels ‘are listening to each other’ and all channel can be adjusted seperately, (like the plugins from Toneboosters, Red Rock Sound, Fiedler, some of FabFilter and PSP, etc).
In ProTools and Logic, all third party plugins can be loaded as multi-mono too, in Nuendo multi-mono is only possible with the stock plugins. But none of them are full multichannel, as far as I know. Or do I miss something? (I hope so…)
