Import midi file always imports into flow 2, (page 2), with empty flow 1

Dorico 6 pro, total newb here. Beginning with a single Midi file–a single piano track, I have been trying to import it into a new Dorico project. No matter what I have tried, Import midi file always imports into flow 2, (page 2), with empty flow 1. I’ve tried loading the midi file into cubase 15, exporting that to a midi file, and I’ve tried importing MusicXML but have the same result. I am 100% certain that I have missed some setup thing, because dorico is completely new to me. I will be extremely grateful for any help you might offer to get me past this obstacle. (yes I’ve watched a number of beginner’s (and not so beginner’s) videos, looked in the manual, searched here, etc. but have obviouosly missed something crucial)

If you haven’t gone through the Dorico first steps guide - Steinberg - do that before trying something as advanced as importing a midi file. Anything you import into an existing project will start at the next available flow. Whether that flow is on a separate page or not depends on settings in the Layout options. Do this instead: When you first start Dorico, the steinburg hub is there. Go to the file menu, Open and open a midi file. The resulting imported file will be the only flow in the project.

Thank you James, you have really helped me!

This is normal behaviour. You are importing into an existing file, even if the Flow 1 is empty.

To avoid this you can simply open the MIDI file (File>Open..). It will open as Flow 1 in a new file. The same applies to MusicXML files.

(EDIT: If you do import rather than open, you can always delete the (empty) Flow1 in Setup)
