I recently imported an XML file into Dorico that is a 4 voice church hymn. In Finale it imports correctly, but in Dorico I get weird results with the Soprano/Alto staff and the Tenor/Bass staff. How can I get the parts to divide correctly and then flip the stems in the correct direction?
On each staff I would Filter by voice (Alto / Tenor) and hit the F key (to flip the stems).
Alternatively, do the filter by voice (as @k_b says) but move them into upstem or downstem voices (Alto would be downstem. Tenor would be upstem)
First step would be to make sure the stems aren’t fixed into one direction to begin with: select all and apply ‘Remove forced stem’ from the right-click menu.
Then, if the problem persists, do as @k_b and @Janus suggest: select the notes/voices that should flip, and assign to them a different voice (new or existing) with the opposite stem direction.
If you turn on Voice Colors (under the View menu) you will see more clearly who the voices are assigned). You can select and filter by voice to reassign to a different voice as desired.
I find that “Remove forced stem” fixes nearly all of the stem issues with voices on musicXML files from Finale that are imported into Dorico. On notes that it doesn’t work, I usually find that, in error, the Finale file has them in the same voice as the stem direction indicates. I suspect that rare occasion was an input error in selecting the appropriate voice when using Finale and not an export error.
