Importing a Flow Messes Up Instruments

I tried to import a flow as a movement in a suite I am working on. The source was a piece with one flow.

After the import, the instruments were messed up: for example the four horns in the imported flow were missing and their parts were assigned to other instruments.

  • The source flow has three trumpets while the target has two.
  • The source has a woodblock. The target does not.
  • The target has percussion instruments the source does not have.

Do I need to make the instrument lists the same in Setup for both files before importing? I could add a woodblock and third trumpet to the target, if that is what is required.

Hi @konradh, when you import a flow in a current project, Dorico asks if you want to merge the source players with the target players, so you don’t have duplicate players after importing the flow. If you choose to merge (which is recommended) Dorico will then add players that exist only in the source and not in the target, as necessary.

[Generally you need to make sure that the instrument held by a player is really that what you want (sometimes with xml import, you see “trumpet” as instrument name, but it is only the name, and in reality that is not a trumpet at all…, in which case you want to change the instrument into the needed one, before importing that flow. I hope is clear what I wrote…)]

For percussion instruments, especially for perc. kits, you have to make sure that the kits are identical between source and target (with the same instruments, noteheads, positioning, playing techniques etc…), otherwise Dorico cannot merge those players.

If you would like to share the source and target projects (also without music), we can give precise advice on how to proceed.

Thank you very merge. I did select Merge, but I will try again and see where things are going wrong.
