Importing Finale xml files as flows

I have a multi-movement work for big band that I want to bring into Dorico as multiple flows.

I’ve spent the last couple of weeks getting the first movement looking the way I want in Dorico and I’m starting to feel “a bit” comfortable in the new program. Now I just imported the second movement as a flow and it’s creating new parts when I asked it to merge parts. The instrumentation is exactly the same, and I checked in Finale that all the names and midi channels are the same for both files.

The first time I did it, it created a “trumpet in D” part instead of trumpet 4, and a Drums II part. I just tried it again and it created new Alto 1/2, tpt 1/2/2/3, bass 2, and drums 2.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Solved my own problem

If anyone else is having issues with this I can explain how I did it.

Yes, please explain how you solved this issue. I’ve had similar problems with XML import.

No problem.

I could not find a way to have no issues, but when I have “compressed .xml” and “include linked parts…” selected in Finale’s .xml preferences, I only had the Trumpet in D and Drum II issues.

The trumpet in D was actually part of the trumpet 4 player, it was just hard to see that in the 2nd flow when the instrument name was just Trumpet in D. Dorico created it as a “double” in the trumpet 4 players list. So I went to write mode, galley view and then I could see the trumpet 4 and the trumpet in D. I copied everything from the trumpet in D into trumpet 4, and then in Setup mode, opened up trumpet 4 and deleted the trumpet in D.

The drum II part was a bit trickier as it was created as a new player, but when I went to write mode, galley view, drum 1 wasn’t there, so I couldn’t copy drum 2 into it. The trick is, in setup, open up the drum I part, right click the 3 dots, and under flows choose “include player in all flows”. Now it does show up in Flow 2 and I can copy drum2 into drum 1 and then delete drum 2 from the players list.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the explanation. I will try adjusting the Finale XML preferences.

Alternatively, just select the Drum 1 player and add it to Flow 2…

Thanks Janus. Where is “add to flow 2” found?

Found it! Still not used to keeping the properties window open.

I think of the Setup page as a wiring diagram connecting Players to Flows to Layouts.
