In search of the best orchestral DTM environment! For my orchestral DTM environment using DORICO, I use two 34-inch monitors, positioned vertically. This allows me to check the score without scaling it down. This maximizes Dorico’s performance as a music notation software! Are there any other users using it like this? Let’s exchange information.
I have been using a 42" 16:9 4K monitor for pretty much the same purpose. To me it seemed more flexible and convenient than the two screens I had used before.
I see! When you say 42 inches, you’re probably referring to using it in portrait orientation, not in standard landscape orientation. Oh, I may not have explained it well enough, but I use Dorico as a DAW, not as a music notation software. I make rough adjustments in the music notation and fine adjustments in the Key Editor. This is Dorico’s greatest feature. In particular, being able to set the timing of pronunciation and the actual playing length without changing the note length is a great feature. If you do it too much, things may not add up, so if you don’t understand music notation well, it may be a problem!
I use the monitor in landscape mode (can’t imagine what a 42" monitor in portrait mode would do to my neck
). The 42" has a height of 21", enough for a pair of 17x11" pages side by side, in addition to the navigation bar and task bar at the top and bottom.
I use a 34-inch monitor in portrait orientation, but the size of the monitor arm is just about enough. I don’t think there’s a better monitor arm that can be used vertically. To view a full orchestral score without scaling it down, you’d have to use it vertically. Before my current monitor, I actually had a 44-inch monitor in landscape orientation, but I messed up while trying to attach it to the monitor arm and ruined the LCD screen, which is how I came up with the idea of using two 34-inch monitors in portrait orientation. I think this is the perfect DAW for orchestral composition and arranging. I highly recommend it to everyone.
