This is a very small and ultimately inconsequential issue, but I’ve noticed that when exporting WAV and MP3 files, the Title metadata is preserved in MP3 exports but not in WAV exports.
It’s been suggested before that it would be great if Dorico allowed users to enter metadata directly at export, particularly fields such as Title, Album, Composer, and other common tags. At the moment, I use Fission to add this information after export, which works well enough, but it does require an additional step in the workflow.
It’s no problem to edit the tags after export, but it would be nice if the export process could use each Flow’s Project Info to pre-populate the relevant metadata fields, leaving the user free to adjust them if needed. I suspect there are more pressing priorities, though… this would simply be a nice quality-of-life improvement.
For Broadcast Wave there is a separate meta data chunk. I need to check on Monday our code what gets written where. Maybe it’s not so difficult to add. Let’s see…
Actually, I looked in the code and we do set the most basic meta data, also in MP3.
And I checked with a different tag editor and that one does recognise our data:
I can see the Title metadata in the MP3 files, but not in the WAV files. I’ve sent both MP3 and WAV exports from Dorico to the Rogue Amoeba support team and will wait to hear what they say. It may simply be an issue with how Fission interprets the metadata tags in WAV files.
I’ve sent a WAV export to an online tag editor and also that one recognises the Title tag in our WAV export. So, yes, I guess Fission interprets the meta data differently.
I’ll report back once the Fission team have had a chance to investigate. It would be fantastic if a future version of Dorico could automatically include additional Flow metadata (such as Composer, Date, and other Project Info fields) when exporting audio files.
I’ve been in contact with the Fission developers and have also checked the behaviour in VLC.
The Fission team believes that Dorico is not writing Title metadata to WAV files. Although, at first glance, a Dorico-produced WAV appears to contain a title when viewed in VLC, it seems that VLC is simply displaying the file name rather than reading an embedded Title tag. If the file name is changed, the Title field shown in VLC changes to match, which suggests it isn’t retrieving metadata from the file itself.
Perhaps this is the same behaviour with the online metadata editor you tested the files with?
I tried with renaming the file and indeed in the title box of Premierly the new name appeared. So then it is a bug on our side, I will enter it into our bug-base.
