Inconsistent repeat playback behaviour

I am a reluctant refugee from Finale and have been acclimatizing myself to Dorico. I have created an arrangement of 3 fiddle tunes in a medley. The first tune is a simple AABB type structure, the 2nd and 3rd tunes are an AAB x2 type structure. The first tune plays perfectly. In the 2nd tune I have a Segno at the beginning of the tune, a 1st and 2nd ending on the A part and a DS at the end of the B part of the tune returning to the Segno at the beginning of the A part of the 2nd tune. The playback of this tune also works well with the repeats working as I intended. The 3rd tune has exactly the same structure as the 2nd tune AAB x2. The 3rd tune has a double Segno at the beginning of the tune, 1st and 2nd ending at the end of the A part of the 3rd tune and a DSS at the end of the 3rd tune. As far as I can tell the repeats in the 2nd tune and the third tune are set up identically, but while the 2nd tune is played back as I would expect A1A2B A1A2B, the third tune will not play the first repeat when the DSS goes back to the beginning of the 3rd tune, i.e. A1A2B A2B.

Can someone help me identify my problem?

Without seeing your project file, we’d just be guessing. Can you upload it here?

In engrave mode, select the first ending bracket in the third tune and change the following properties:

  • No. times played to 3
  • Times played for segment to 1,3
  • Custom text to 1.

It sounds like you’ve written all three movements in a single flow. Have you considered putting each movement in its own flow? They can appear one after the other with or without page breaks and with or without individual titles. The advantage, in this case, is that the repeats and segnos would “reset” for each flow – you would not need the double segno, etc.

P.S. As a Finale refuge myself, if you haven’t seen it already, I highly recommend the “First Steps” video. It is well worth the investment of the little bit of time as it will pay back dividends in productivity!
