Just after installing Dorico 6 I noticed that when one of my Finale produced music XML files was imported, Dorico changed my trombones to Trombone (in Bb) and in Treble clef. It does this when I use a project template. It doesn’t matter which template from which project as it does this every time regardless of what is in the template. A work around is to go to Library->Instruments and change the Trombone in Bb and Treble clef to C and Bass clef. Then make that project your new template. The layout needs to be updated since the import process still can’t match the existing C Bass clef trombone players in the setup, so you have to delete them and then reposition the trombones at the end of the list that were just changed as described above.
(Without seeing the xml file these are just guesses).
Dorico will choose what it thinks is the most appropriate instrument. There are many known problems because of how xml files are encoded (eg an instrument called Bass is likely to be interpreted as a vocal Bass and not say a Bass Guitar).
How you deal with it depends on your particular project, eg…
- You could just change the chosen instrument in Setup to the correct one.
- If your preferred instrument already exists in your project, add it to the (imported) flow (in Setup) and just copy/paste the material into it (you can then delete the ‘wrong’ player from the project)
You certainly should not need to mess around with Instrument definitions!!

I would just change the Instrument of the Player to the correct one in Setup mode.
