I’d like to use:
- an M on a note’s stem to indicate it’s a multiphonic
- an X on a note’s stem to indicate it’s a dead stroke
- a Z on a note’s stem to indicate it’s a buzz roll
Here’s where it gets complicated: I’d like to use all 3 in the same part. Any thoughts how?
I have used custom noteheads which use an x-notehead and a half circle. These two elements can be positioned relative to each other in the notehead editor, but it is a bit fiddly. You need to design different noteheads for downstem and upstem notes. Similarly, as you can see, the ledger lines are too wide, too.
I have departed from this practice since then (2020), but it is something that somewhat works.

We of course plan to add dedicated features to set up custom stem directions in future versions to make this more straightforward.
